Research Ethics and Governance Officer

The University of Southampton is a research-intensive University, with annual research income in excess of £120 million. The Research Ethics and Governance Office (REGO), based in Research and Innovation Services (RIS), provides core support for research ethics across the University and is also responsible for providing advice and support to researchers on all aspects of clinical research governance and other research regulatory compliance.

About the role

We are now looking to recruit a Research Ethics and Governance Officer to join the Research Ethics and Governance Office (REGO). As part of your role, you will support University ethics processes by assisting the faculty research ethics committee chairs in developing new policies, training and information resources related to ethics. You will also undertake governance reviews of research applications submitted by staff and students through the Ethics and Governance Online platform (ERGO II) to ensure that research projects will be conducted in accordance to University policies and guidelines, and where relevant, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Good Clinical Practice (GCP).

In this role, you will have an active part to play in managing a portfolio of clinical trials, including medical devices, human challenge, and clinical trials of investigational medicinal products (CTIMPs). Your responsibilities will span a broad spectrum of studies, ranging from the exploration of new drugs for terminal diseases, through to behavioural and psychological research. Ultimately, you will help to make sure all research and trials comply with regulatory requirements and are conducted to the highest standards. Managing the whole lifecycle of projects, you will provide ongoing advice and support to researchers.

About you

  • In addition to plenty of initiative and a real desire to progress your career in this field, you will demonstrate genuine collaborative spirit and the ability to multi-task and to work well as part of a busy team.
  • You will have excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • You will enjoy the challenge of making things happen in a dynamic environment demonstrating planning and problem-solving skills.
  • You should have an understanding and knowledge of GCP and some awareness of clinical research. Experience in working within the Higher Education sector and/or Health (within the NHS or commercial health research) sector would be an advantage.
  • We offer great training and ongoing development to equip you for success, so you do not need a significant level of relevant experience to join us in this role.

    What we can offer you

In return for your dedication, you will enjoy plenty of scope to grow and thrive within a welcoming and professional team that shares your commitment to high standards and customer service.

As a university we aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive and are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect, and equality of opportunity. We believe that we can only truly meet our objectives if we are reflective of society, so we are passionate about creating a working environment in which you are free to bring your whole self to work.

With a generous holiday allowance as well as additional university closure days we are committed to supporting our staff and students and open to a flexible working approach.
