Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term

The Tyndall National Institute, at University College, Cork is a world leader in the development of wearable sensor systems for use in the body, on the body and around the body. Working closely with a global range of academic, business and clinical partners, our technology is under evaluation by several multinational corporations and is approaching market readiness in a number of areas.

The Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) Group invites applications for the position of Senior Antenna and RF Research Engineer. The applied research program will focus on solving the technical challenges associated with Antenna and RF Design, Simulation and Measurements.

Reporting to the WSN Head of Group and Antenna and RF Team Leader, this is an exciting opportunity to help define and implement an antenna research program in this fast-moving, industrially relevant area of wearable sensing systems.

The successful candidate will be a key member of the team. The candidate will work with and help drive the research agenda for the Antenna and RF Team in multi-disciplinary research with expertise in Antenna and Microwave Engineering. The WSN Group is comprised of engineers, researchers and postgraduate students with various levels of experience and qualifications.

Specific activities for this position will include applied antenna research, project management, research proposal writing, student supervision, travel to international conferences and workshops, participating in industry meetings, proposal project meetings and dissemination of the group's activities in high impact journal and conference publications.

This is a 24-month contract with scope for extension subject to performance and funding secured.

Key Responsibilities

  • Reporting to the Team Leader and WSN Group Head, the candidate will be responsible for the day to day applied research and technical project management of several research projects related to antenna and RF design for wireless sensing systems
  • The successful candidate will have expertise in the specification, design, simulation and characterization of antennas and RF circuits for embedded wireless sensing solutions
  • Enhance Tyndall's position internationally as a world leader in wireless sensing systems
  • Work with Tyndall's industry partners (existing and planned) to identify their Connected Health needs (technologies and applications)
  • Work with national and international research institutions to deliver on collaborative Horizon Europe research projects research
  • Research Laboratory lab management
  • Help in organization of national and international workshops and conferences
  • Lead Work Package activities for Horizon Europe Projects
  • Network internationally with other researchers in academia and industry
  • Lead and work independently on complex research projects
  • Be responsible for project management of multiple projects
  • Act as team player with skills in student mentorship and training
  • Work on own initiative to achieve project goals
  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
  • Essential Criteria

  • Qualified to Master's or PhD level in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or a relevant Science and Engineering discipline with specialization in Electromagnetics, RF and Antenna Engineering
  • Expertise in HFSS EM simulation, AWR and ADS Circuit simulation
  • Demonstrated ability in embedded hardware/PCB design for wireless sensing systems using Altium Designer
  • Expertise in use of specialized RF laboratory equipment such as VNA, Dielectric Measurements, signal generator, spectrum analyzers, anechoic chamber instruments
  • Demonstrated experience working in multiple research projects (National and International projects)
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to and write research proposals
  • Desirable Criteria

  • Evidence of creative skills/creativity
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English including experience in writing peer reviewed papers with good knowledge of Latex
  • Proven publication record in Tier-1 journals and conferences in the field of Antennas and RF
  • Experience with STM32 microcontroller embedded design
  • Experience in the use of commercial wireless radio transceivers for wireless sensors
  • Experience in use of non-standard RF materials to implement antenna and RF components and systems
  • Experience in wearable system development
  • Knowledge of wireless BLE communication protocols and Nordic chipsets

    Appointment may be made at Admin V scale B range €47,685 - €58,560 or Admin III €56,079- €66,954 per annum. Salary placement on the appointment will be in accordance with relevant experience and public sector pay policy.
