The position of Research Associate has become available to work with Dr Umar Toseeb in the Department of Education at the University of York. The successful candidate will be part of the Child and Adolescent Neurodevelopmental Diversity Group. Further details about the research group can be found here (https: // www. york.ac.uk/education/our-staff/academic/umar- toseeb/#research-content).

The Research Associate will work on a secondary data analysis project funded by the Youth Endowment Fund. The project is a longitudinal investigation of the relationship between special educational needs and violent offending. The aim of the project is to identify what works to reduce violent offending through the secondary analysis of existing data from the Ministry of Justice, Department for Education, and the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children.

This is a fixed-term, full-time position for 15 months, available from August 2024.

Given the project is based solely on the secondary analysis of existing data, we seek a candidate with excellent quantitative analysis skills. Applications will be shortlisted primarily on the following criteria:

  • PhD (or nearing completion) in psychology or a related quantitative discipline

  • Proficient in the use of R or STATA

  • Ability to plan and fit advanced statistical models

  • Experience of analysing data from existing large datasets

  • Ability to write up research work for publication in high profile journals and engage in public dissemination

  • In return, we offer a collaborative and supportive research environment. This is an excellent opportunity for an early career researcher who wants to expand their research and analysis skills and publish peer reviewed papers.

Enquiries about this position should be directed to Dr Umar Toseeb ([email protected]).

    Condition of employment

This role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. Consequently, all applicants will be asked to declare both unspent and spent convictions on their application form.

Appointment of the successful candidate will be conditional on a Disclosure and Barring Service check.

The University strives to be diverse and inclusive – a place where we can ALL be ourselves.

We particularly encourage applications from people who identify as Black, Asian or from a Minority Ethnic background, who are underrepresented at the University.

We offer family friendly, flexible working arrangements, with forums and inclusive facilities to support our staff. #EqualityatYork
