Research Associate (Fixed Term)

The Medical Research Council Mitochondrial Biology Unit (MRC MBU), University of Cambridge wishes to appoint a post-doctoral Research Associate to join Dr Alex Whitworth and the Mitochondrial Neurodegeneration group.

A world-renowned centre for research, the MRC MBU is a vibrant community focused on the involvement of mitochondria and their dysfunction in an ever- increasing range of human diseases. Additional information can be found at www. mrc-mbu.cam.ac.uk.

The Mitochondrial Neurodegeneration group pursues an integrated, multi- disciplinary programme of investigations to understand the homeostatic mechanisms that regulate the integrity of mitochondria and maintain normal neuronal function and survival. The group uses Drosophila and cellular models to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis of various neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's Disease, Huntington's Disease and Motor Neuron Disease. We are now expanding our model repertoire to include mouse and human iNeuron models.

The post-holder will lead one or more projects analysing the role of mitochondrial ion handling (mainly, calcium and iron via MCU and CISD1 proteins) in normal physiology and the contribution to neurodegenerative diseases. The projects will focus on the use of mouse models and human iNeurons. The post-holder will be expected to play a major role in the work of the research group, through the conduct of research, introduction of new ideas, dissemination of research results, support and training of others. Candidates will have (or be about to be awarded) a PhD in molecular or cellular biology or similar discipline, and a track record of related research achievements.

Informal enquires about this position should be directed to Dr Alex Whitworth ([email protected]).

This is a fixed term post until 31 March 2027.

Applicants should include a CV and cover letter detailing why they are suitable for the position and their experience, along with contact information for three professional referees who can be contacted prior to interview.
