Position Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and productive chemist/chemical biologist to conduct daily research on exciting recently funded projects of early drug discovery and chemical biology (https: // iit.msu.edu/news/2023-6-6-lee- receives-r35-r01.html). The key functions for this position will be to:

  • Lead a project team to investigate how lipid metabolites affect neurodegeneration and auto-immunity with novel model organisms and cell models
  • Apply, develop and conduct high-throughput screenings in novel model organisms and cell lines to determine the activity of the newly synthesized compounds and metabolites.
  • Adapt new technologies and solutions to program studies.
  • Ensure laboratory compliance with safety regulations and maintain routine day-to-day laboratory operations.
  • Assist project team members in running specific biochemical assays developed in the lab.
  • Assist in the preparation of presentations, manuscripts, and proposals.

    Required Degree

    Doctorate -Chemical Science or related fields

    Minimum Requirements

    Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired through completing a PhD program in chemical science or related fields (Chemistry, biochemistry, chemical biology, chemical engineering, etc); highly experienced in C. elegans and/or cell-based model research; experience in metabolomics research; experience in RNA-seq or related techniques; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in overseeing research projects and laboratory operations, operating and maintaining a variety of laboratory equipment, performing specialized and difficult analytical and research techniques and assays, and designing research experiments; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in scientific communications included but not limited to manuscript and proposal preparations.

    Desired Qualifications

    Ph.D. in Chemistry or related fields in Chemistry or related field with at least 3 years of relevant research experience; experience in developing a stem-cell model will be considered a strength; sound knowledge of high throughput assays and or experience in high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) would also be considered a strength; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; works independently and leads from the bench; demonstrates creative initiative and successful in securing grants/fellowships; results oriented with effective problem solving skills; open to suggestions and able to critically evaluate and embrace new or different ideas.
