Job description

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team in the National Centre for Combustion and Aerothermal Technology working on a project in collaboration with Rolls-Royce. We are looking for a post-doctoral researcher for a 24-month contract to join a programme of work which will investigate Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis techniques for afterburner or ‘reheat' systems which are used to increase thrust on aircraft engines.

The work would involve simulating various aspects of a simplified but representative system, including fuel spray formation and combustion, to test, validate and develop modelling techniques. Suitable numerical methodologies will be tested for different aspects, such as high-fidelity interface resolving methods for atomisation and Large Eddy Simulation with turbulent chemistry models for combustion. Results will be compared to experimental results to improve modelling capability and establish recommendations for further improvements. This will consider both theoretical and practical aspects of the modelling with fundamental results published through journals and conferences as well as reports to the project partner.
