An opportunity has arisen for an early-career researcher or PhD candidate to work on a funded qualitative research project titled a prospective assessment of the acceptability of a behaviour change intervention to improve responses to clinically deteriorating patients: a focus group study informed by the Theoretical Framework of Acceptability. The project will be led by Dr Duncan Smith from the School of Health and Psychological Sciences in collaboration with Dr Mandeep Sekhon from St Georges University of London.


It is anticipated that the successful applicant will be involved in all stages of the research process including recruiting focus group participants (healthcare staff from acute hospitals in the greater London area), co- facilitating focus groups, analysing and synthesising qualitative data derived from the focus groups using Framework Method, and writing up the results for publication in a peer reviewed journal. All these activities will be supported by Dr Smith and/ or Dr Sekhon.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will have a good first degree (2:2 or above) in a healthcare discipline, psychology, or social sciences, be in possession of a doctorate, or be enrolled on a doctoral programme. We particularly welcome applications for PhD candidates who have passed their upgrade examination. We are looking for an individual with experience of using qualitative methods to collect and analyse data. Experience of facilitating focus groups and coding/analysing verbatim transcripts derived from focus groups would be beneficial.
