The Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages is a young and vibrant Department established in 2004, devoted to the study of language and mind, with strengths in theoretical linguistics, language acquisition, bilingualism, sign linguistics, and language disorders. We are seeking a Research Assistant Professor to join the research project "Harnessing the potential of large language models for language research, assessment, and clinical use," led by Professor Cai Zhenguang Garry. The project involves collaboration with Professor Wong Patrick Chun Man of our Department, Professor Wu Xixin from the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management, and Dr. Xi Madeline Xiaoming from the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority outside CUHK.

The RAP will be responsible for working on the application of large language models in language learning/teaching, assessment, and therapy. Candidates should possess a solid background in natural language processing, with a particular emphasis on large language modeling, and the following qualifications:

  • PhD in computer science, psychology, linguistics, or a related field

  • Postdoctoral research experience and/or a strong publication record commensurate with rank

  • Strong computer programming background, especially in large language model pre-training and fine-tuning

  • Experience with clinical language research is especially welcome

  • Appointment will initially be made on contract basis for three years commencing before January 2025. The salary will be commensurate with experience, in addition to contract-end gratuity and medical coverage.
