Job Title: 2 x Research Assistant Interns (Centre for Social Mobility) Internship Scheme: Student Campus Partnership (SCP)
Start Date: January 2025
End Date: July 2025

Working Hours and Pattern: Total of 50 hours allocation from January to July 2025 Flexible work pattern, with hours distributed according to project needs Hybrid work (online meetings)
Salary: Hourly Rate: £14.12 per hour (£12.60 basic hourly rate + £1.52 holiday pay)
Workplace Address: Hybrid working (online and across three University of Exeter campuses). Note: Travel to Streatham Campus in January 2025 will be required for in- person workshop and meeting.
Job Summary: We are looking for two enthusiastic and detail-oriented Research Assistant Interns to support a project funded by the Centre for Social Mobility, led by faculty in the School of Education. The main responsibilities of the role will include assisting with the facilitation of focus groups and online meetings, collecting qualitative and quantitative data, and performing data analysis to inform the study's outcomes. This position provides an excellent opportunity for postgraduate researchers who are interested in expanding on their educational research, data analysis. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from PGRs who have experience or an interest in social mobility and policy and student-parent focused research. We also welcome applications from student-parents.
Purpose of the Role: The primary aim of this role is to assist in researching the barriers faced by student parents in progressing through higher education from undergraduate to postgraduate research. The RAI will work closely with the project team to collect and analyse data, contributing to actionable insights that can inform university policies.
Duties and Responsibilities: • Attend focus groups and online meetings to support data collection • Take detailed notes during workshops and online sessions • Assist with setting up and facilitating the logistics of workshops (both in-person and online) • Analyse qualitative and quantitative data using software tools (e.g., Thematic Analysis, NVivo, Excel) • Support the preparation of reports and presentations based on research findings • Liaise with participants, ensuring their needs are met during the research process • Collaborate with the project's principal investigator, co-investigator, and research team
Training and Development: This role provides a range of learning and development opportunities, including: • Hands-on experience in research and project management • Development of data analysis skills, including qualitative coding and survey analysis • Opportunities to enhance communication and organisational skills through workshop facilitation • Experience working in a dynamic research environment with support from experienced academics
Support Available: • Meetings with the co-principal investigator and research team for guidance and feedback • Access to the University of Exeter's Wellbeing and Career Support services • Mentorship and one-on-one support from the project team to help develop research skills
About You (Person Specification)
Required Skills: • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team • Good communication skills, both written and verbal
• Experience with data entry and data analysis (one Research Assistant will focus on qualitative methods, and the other on quantitative methods, with both demonstrating a willingness to engage with a mixed-methods research approach).
• Interest in education, social mobility, and research.
Preferred Skills: • Familiarity with data analysis software (e.g., NVivo, Excel) • Previous experience in a research role, either as part of a team or independently (desirable but not essential). • Prior experience with empirical publications, ideally with contributions to published research (desirable but not essential).
About the Department: The Centre for Social Mobility, in collaboration with the principal investigators, focuses on improving access and success for underrepresented groups in higher education. This project aims to understand the barriers faced by student parents and contribute to the development of strategies to support them.
