Research Assistant (Histology)

The post-holder will work as part of a small team providing an inclusive histology support service for the Institute. They will be expected to undertake the day-to-day collection, preparation and cutting of tissue samples, histological scoring/analysis and presentation of data. They will liaise with individual research groups regarding work requests. They will be expected to help train other members of the team in histological techniques.

In this role you will undertake development and standardisation of histological and immunohistochemical techniques and document and analyse experimental data . You will be responsible for the histological scoring of disease sections and the presentation of results as well as facilitating the highest possible standards of research within the laboratory. You will liaise with research group teams to create a productive research environment for everyone in the laboratory and contribute to the preparation of ethics submissions, grants, grant reports and scientific publications and presentations. In execution of these roles and responsibilities the post- holder will, at all times abide by local and University rules and codes of practice with regard to Health and Safety.

To be successful in this role, it is essential that you hold a BSc / MSc in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent degree and possess a specialist advanced qualification and/or experience of immunohistochemical techniques. You must have experience in tissue processing and histological sectioning along with experience with a wide range of murine/human tissue and organs. You must be able to demonstrate an ability to troubleshoot experimental protocol and an ability to organise your work with minimal supervision and keep meticulous records.

It is preferrable that you have experience working under a laboratory quality management system, have experience within the the Rheumatology/Immunology research fields and have some familiarity with the Human Tissue Act. However these skills are not required.
