The Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences (PLEN), Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen invites applications for a position as Research assistant

About us Research and teaching at PLEN covers topics within Agriculture, Biotechnology and Environment. The department is divided into nine sections dealing with a wide range of subjects. Focus is on plants, animals, soil and microorganisms – from molecules through organisms to ecosystems. It is our vision to maintain and develop our position as one of the principal centres for plant science and related areas, based on excellent basic and applied research. The department hosts state-of-the-art infrastructure, unique field research facilities, and many opportunities for collaboration within the department and internationally. The Research assistant will be affiliated with the Section for Plant and Soil Sciences located at the Frederiksberg campus. We value strong collaborative skills and the ability to guide and inspire early-stage career scientists and students.

The Research assistant will support a range of different research project within the department. Our research ambitions are high and we strive to publish our work in top-tier journals. The research environment is vibrant, friendly, collaborative and international, consisting of scientists and students with diverse academic backgrounds such as plant science, molecular biology and chemistry. The Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences is located in central Copenhagen at the Frederiksberg Campus. Copenhagen ranks among the most liveable cities of the world and has several times been voted the number one capital in annual quality of life surveys.

Tasks In this project, bio-nanotechnological tools are explored to facilitate foliar uptake and utilization of essential plant nutrients. This includes studying processes controlling the interaction between nutrient-loaded nanoparticles and plant cells at the molecular level. Specifically, state-of-the-art bio- imaging techniques are employed to investigate how nanoparticles interact with plant cell walls and the plasma membrane. This involves working with plant single-cell cultures and protoplasts. In addition, nanoparticle surface modifications and reagents are assessed to manipulate cell wall and plasma membrane properties.

Applicants with the following professional and personal skills will be preferred

  • Documented experience in scientific writing with publications in top-tier journals
  • Strong academic competence and in-depth knowledge of plant physiology, molecular biology, and functional properties of essential plant nutrients
  • Experience in bio-imaging techniques such as CLSM and TEM
  • Experience in plant tissue elemental analysis such as ICP-MS and LA-ICP-MS
  • Experience in foliar application of nanoparticle-encapsulated plant nutrients
  • Teaching experience
  • Ability to design and execute research activities independently, but collaborative and enjoy working with colleagues.
