Research Assistant (Fixed Term)

We are seeking to recruit an energetic and well organised person to manage a busy Wellcome Trust funded laboratory and facilitate ongoing research projects within the group. The research group is part of the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. The laboratory works on the molecular mechanisms that control killing by cytotoxic T lymphocytes - important cells of the immune system that kill virally infected and cancer cells. Our research combines cell biology and immunology, using genetic approaches including CRISPR and single cell RNA sequencing of primary lymphocytes, together with high-resolution imaging.

The holder of the post will play a key role in the smooth running of the laboratory, particularly managing the organisation of the laboratory, responsibility for databases, ordering, orientating new staff, working with students (undergraduate and postgraduate) and supporting research projects in the laboratory as necessary.

The applicant must be a graduate in a scientific subject and several years' experience working within a biological laboratory environment would be preferable. We are seeking someone who will be able to oversee the general running of the laboratory and facilitate the work of the scientists within it. This will involve assisting with experiments, but also ensuring that the laboratory runs smoothly day-to-day. There is flexibility within this role that could be possible for applicants with experience requiring part-time working.

Core tasks will include but would not be limited to:

  • Assisting with experiments (eg molecular biology, cell culture, flow cytometry).
  • Placing orders and liaising with company representatives to negotiate prices.
  • Maintenance and cataloguing of laboratory stocks (eg plasmids and cell lines).
  • Keeping task assessments up to date.
  • Management of laboratory equipment.
  • This position is graded on the University's Grade 5 scale, for which the salary range is £29,605 - £33,966 per annum. The start salary offered will be based on qualification and relevant skills acquired and will be determined by the funding available.

The Cambridge Institute for Medical Research (CIMR) is located on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus and it is a collaborative institute at the interface between fundamental research and the clinic with a mission to determine the molecular mechanisms of disease in order to advance human health.

For informal enquiries please contact Professor Gillian Griffiths ([email protected]).
