The Wireless Sensor Network Group (WSN) at the Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork is currently advertising a Research Assistant position in the area of Antenna Design.

The Tyndall National Institute, at University College, Cork is a world leader in the development of wearable sensor systems for use in the body, on the body and around the body. Working closely with a global range of academic, business and clinical partners, our technology is under evaluation by several multinational corporations and is approaching market readiness in a number of areas.

The WSN Group, Tyndall National Institute - University College Cork, invites applications for an appointment as Research Assistant in Antenna Design. The applied research program will focus on solving the technical challenges associated with antenna and RF Design, Simulation and Measurement in this exciting and rapidly expanding R&D field.

This is an initial 12-month contract. Reporting to the WSN Head of Group, this is an exciting opportunity to help define and implement an antenna research program in this fast-moving, industrially relevant area of wearable sensing systems.

The successful candidate will work with and help drive the research agenda for a team of multi-disciplinary researchers with expertise in Antenna and Microwave Engineering. Specific activities for this position will include applied antenna and RF research, antenna design, and being part of a research team developing wireless sensors (Chipless RFIS and NFC) and writing up their findings for dissemination in conjunction with senior researchers.

Key Responsibilities

  • To work under the direction of the Principal Investigator/Project Team Leader in the design and development of Chipless RFIF and NFC sensor systems.
  • The candidate will be required to undertake the system specification, design and deployment of chipless radio frequency identification (RFID) sensors based on resonant antenna structures in association with and under the guidance of a team of senior researchers and develop reports for dissemination in appropriate journals and conferences in conjunction with the senior research team.
  • To engage in Education and Outreach (EPE) activities to showcase the research activities of the WSN group as well as the Vistamilk Center
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
  • Essential Criteria

  • Qualified to Batchelor's level in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or a relevant Science and Engineering discipline with specialization in Electromagnetics, RF and Antenna Engineering
  • Demonstrated experience in HFSS or CST EM simulation, AWR and ADS Circuit simulation tools
  • Demonstrated experience in using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in the context of electromagnetics (EM) research
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of specialized RF laboratory equipment such as VNA, Dielectric Measurements, signal generator, spectrum analyzers, anechoic chamber instruments
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English including experience in writing peer reviewed papers and a Proven track record in academic publishing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Intellectual Property management in the form of Invention Disclosure Forms, Licenses or Patents.
  • Desirable Criteria

  • Evidence of creative skills/creativity
  • Experience in wearable, implantable sensor development
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong track record in EPE (Education and Public Engagement) activities and ability to communicate science to the general public

    Appointment may be made on the IUA Research Assistant Scale €30,025- €39,908 per annum. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
