We are currently accepting applications for the positions of temporary relief 2nd mate, 3rd mate, and AB Special (or higher).
Duties:2nd Mate: The 2nd mate stands 8 hours of navigational bridge watch, while continuously monitoring the ship's position. The 2M maintains logs and other records tracking the ships movements; supervises qualified and alert lookouts during watch at sea to ensure a properly maintained and efficient watch; checks to the helm steers correct courses, maneuvers ship, monitors communication and operational safety, transits and facilitates and supports the efficient scientific operations of each voyage. Ensures that the proper procedures and safety practices are followed and checks that bridge and navigation related machinery and equipment are in good working order. 2nd Mate Maintains all navigational equipment, publications, and charts. Maintains accurate navigational chart inventories and publication supply inventories and recommends orders. As Navigator, responsible for updating and correcting charts and publications, passage plans, science cruise plan entry of mission stations into Electronic Chart Display Information System (ECDIS). Ensures that all standard navigation day's work is performed by all watches and that operational checklists are maintained. Plots voyage tracks for the Master's approval using up-to-date Sailing Directions, Coast Pilot, Light List, Tide and Current Tables. Ensures all required flags are aboard in good condition. Weather Officer: Responsible for gathering weather information, general maintenance of all weather related equipment assigned and adequate supplies are on board at all times. Review consumables, track service to prevent unnecessary duplication. Responsible for radio and GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) radio. Routine inspections of bridge and navigation related machinery and equipment. Ensures bridge electronics, alarms systems and lights are in good working order; provides training to all watch personnel on the bridge in safe navigational practices and in the proper use of navigational equipment to include deck alarm systems, fixes fire, smoke, flooding systems, security rounds and systems, and gangway watch procedures. Ability to operate small boats. Assists the deck when tying up the vessel. Actively serve in duties as defined by the Master, as part of ship's safety management and emergency preparedness. Actively participate in all emergency drills and situations and perform other duties as assigned. Member of firefighting and emergency response teams. Prepares and maintains turnover notes for reliefs. Perform and assist with other related duties as required or directed.Essential
3rd Mate: Normally stands 8 hours of navigational bridge watch, while continuously monitoring the ship's position and condition. Maintains required logs and records. Checks that helm steers correct courses, maneuvers ship, communicates and coordinates mission support with departments and research personnel to ensure operational readiness and efficient scientific operations of each voyage. Follows policies, procedures, and guidelines of the ship's safety management system. The 3M acts as Safety Officer and Small Boat Officer, responsible for the condition and repair of the lifeboats, life rafts, life rings, life jackets and all fire fighting, damage control safety equipment. Prepares reports and submits requisitions to the Chief Mate for approval. Advises crew as to their emergency stations and duties during emergencies and emergency drills. If assigned to command a life raft or rescue boat, the 3M will muster the crew, instructing them in their duties and in proper handling of survival gear EPIRBS, SARTS, immersion suits, and thermal protection. Maintains accurate and orderly damage control locker, emergency supply inventories, service records, and order status. Follows and maintains historical and current documentation requirements and regulations for inspections. Performs inspection, maintenance, and inventories of all lifesaving, emergency, damage control, and designated personal protective equipment. Assists deck with vessel mooring, loading and stowage. Actively serve in duties as defined by the Master, as part of ship's safety management and emergency preparedness. Actively participate in all emergency drills and situations. AB Special or higher: As directed by the Chief Mate and Boatswain, this unlicensed Deck position is responsible for safe and proper maintenance and operation of winches, A-frames, cranes, davits, and windlasses, capstans, cranes, hand tools, small crafts and other deck machinery. Handles lines when mooring and unmooring. Mobilizes and demobilizes for science cruises by rigging gangways, loading and stowing stores and scientific equipment, ensures that all cargo is properly lashed and all hatches are secure. Works non- standard flexible watch hours, stands watch as look-out. Rigs, deploys and retrieves over the side science packages. Splices wire or fiber line, works aloft and over the side of the ship, sews, repairs and mends canvas, chips paint, prepares surfaces, mixes and applies paint. Works with small boats and acts as a member of emergency and lifesaving teams. Assumes the duties of the cox'n or person in charge of the life raft or rescue boat. Performs routine preventative maintenance of all Deck Department assigned interior and exterior areas including ship's hull, decks, bulkheads, passageways and superstructure. Maintains sanitary cleanliness of the ship and keeps assigned areas in shipshape condition. Adheres to safe working practices ensuring safety of all hands involved in deck related operations through training, use proper safety equipment, and following safety procedures and guidelines. Understands pertinent safety, environmental, regulatory rules and regulations. Keeps Chief Mate and Boatswain well informed on a daily basis. Performs other related duties as required.Essential

Knowledge of and ability to interpret regulations from the following: U.S. Coast Guard, National Science Foundation, UNOLS and UAF, 33CFR, 46 CFR, SOLAS, IMO, and MARPOL.

AB Special (or higher): Advanced and pertinent knowledge and experience with safely over-boarding and recovering equipment at sea. Advanced deck equipment skills: crane, winch, davit and small boat launch, recovery and operation. Knowledge of life raft equipment and able to assume the duties of the cox'n or man in charge of the life raft or rescue boat. Experience in preventive maintenance of deck equipment, ship maintenance and upkeep, proper methods of prep/paint work, inventory of painting and preservation equipment. Line handling and warping during berthing and departing movement of vessels; rigging and handling of deck equipment and supplies. Small boat handling, proficiency as a rigger, loads and rigging/un-rigging ladders, brows, and gangways. Ability to create electronic documents and inventory spreadsheets. Stand navigation bridge watches at helm and lookout, and in port security watches. Adaptability to apply knowledge and skill to perform other mission-related duties as assigned, including duties related to the safety of the vessel and personnel. Ability to develop and maintain a positive working relationship with all vessel and visiting personnel.
U.S. Coast Guard's Navigation and Vessel Inspection Circular (NVIC) 04-08 requires mariners demonstrate agility, balance and physical fitness needed to work on board a vessel by successfully completing 13 different performance tests. Performing rounds and working in an active sea, work aloft, climb up and down steep and vertical ladders and enter and exit compartments through hatches, doors and sills up to two feet high. Participate in emergency drills and in launching boats and life rafts. Perform physical labor, climb and handle weights and equipment over 50 lbs. Perform rounds at sea. Ability to work with others in close quarters under arduous weather conditions. Able to work a twelve-hour shift at sea.
Preferred Experience & Education:
2nd Mate: One year of experience as 3rd Mate on unlimited tonnage vessels. Prefer experience on research vessels, vessels with azimuthing thrusters, and dynamic positioning systems.
3rd Mate: One year of experience as AB or 3M on unlimited tonnage vessels. Prefer experience on research vessels, vessels with azimuthing thrusters, and dynamic positioning systems.
AB Special (or higher): Prefer prior experience as an AB on vessels where deploying and retrieving gear over the side is routinely required. Graduation from a maritime academy with a license of 3M unlimited may be substituted for previous AB experience.
Required Experience & Education:
Applicants MUST have a U. S. Coast Guard (USCG) Merchant Mariners document (MMD) or Merchant Mariners Credential (MMC) endorsed for qualified rating that is being applied for: 2nd Mate: Any Gross Tons Upon Oceans with endorsements of Radar Observer Unlimited, GMDSS, VI/1, VI/2, VI/3, VI/4, VI/6. STCW Rating I/2, II/1 II/3. 3rd Mate: Any Gross Tons Upon Oceans with endorsements of Radar Observer Unlimited, GMDSS, VI/1, VI/2, VI/3, VI/4, VI/6. STCW Rating I/2, II/1 II/3. Able Seafarer: -Special (or higher) and RFPNW endorsements; Rating: I/2, II/4, VI/1, VI/6, I/9.
All applicants must include a copy of the MMC endorsement, STCW medical Certificate and Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) Card showing the current expiration date to be considered of this position. All unlicensed personnel must have all applicable training as required by the Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watch keeping (STCW). RFPNW, Lifeboat, Fast Rescue Boat, HAZWOPER, First Aid and CPR certifications. Must have a current US Passport.
Salary Information:
These are temporary positions.
2nd Mate: grade 81. Including overtime and cruise leave cash out, pay averages about $500/day
3rd Mate: grade 80. Including overtime and cruise leave cash out, pay averages about $470/day
AB: grade 77. Including overtime and cruise leave cash out, pay averages about $350 - $380 per day, depending on license.
