The PSC Tutor/Lab Aide assists students with their lecture and lab material during scheduled hours at the Physical Sciences Center. They will also assist the Physical Sciences Lab Assistants with lab duties.

Minimum Education/Experience

Must be a current OCCC student enrolled in a minimum of 6 hours for the Fall or Spring semester or enrolled in a minimum of 3 hours for the Summer semester.

OR

Must be a current OCCC student with a Federal Work Study award.

AND

Must have made a C or better in General Chemistry I and/or Physics I or higher.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Must demonstrate effective communication and human relations skills while performing at work.

Must be able to adhere to policies, procedures and guidelines to assure personal safety, and the safety of other personnel.

Knowledge relevant to the tutoring position for which the applicant is applying.

Ability to observe and detect signs of hazards and obstacles that may cause injury to students and staff in the Physical Sciences Lab.

Must be able to perform duties without constant direct supervision.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

1. GENERAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Medium work: This position requires the person to occasionally exert up to 50 pounds of force and frequently exert up to 10 pounds of force to constantly grasp, lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

2. PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES: This position requires the person to frequently communicate with and listen to students, faculty, staff, and others to perform the essential functions of the position. Must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations.

This position requires the person to frequently move about the Chemistry/Physics Lab to assist students and perform the essential functions of the position.

This position frequently requires the person to operate a computer and other office/lab equipment to perform the essential functions of the position.

This position requires the person to frequently operate equipment that involves repetitive motions of hands and wrists.

This position requires the person to frequently remain in a standing and stationary position.

This position requires the person to frequently position self to access materials that may be above head or at ground level.

This position requires the person to use upper and lower body to exert force up to 50 pounds to push, pull, grasp, and/or lift materials or equipment.

This position requires the person to frequently position self to work with lab equipment or assist students.

3. VISUAL ACUITY: This position requires the person to judge, observe and assess the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations.

4. WORKING CONDITIONS This position's essential functions are performed in an indoor, office or lab setting.

This position requires the person to frequently be exposed to hazards such as but not limited to: close proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, exposure to high heat, chemicals, oils, or infectious diseases,fumes, odors, dusts, mists, and gases.

Completed general chemistry I & II

OR

Completed physics I & II

Required Training

All OCCC training that is appropriate for this position when offered.

Work Hours

Flexible work schedule ranging from 10 – 25 hours per week, may include nights or weekends depending on PSC operational requirements. Hours are set each semester. Schedules will respect the students course load demands.

Job Duties (Duties Assignment Statement)

PSC Tutor/Lab Aide assists students with their lecture material, lab work, and special projects in person or via zoom during their work hours in the PSC.

Effectively interact and communicate with students, faculty and staff while performing duties.

Assist with administrative tasks in the PSC including answering phones, directing students, answering general questions about the PSC and campus.

Participate in training offered by OCCC appropriate to this position to remain effective in this positions assigned duties.

Assist in opening or closing the PSC following procedures as assigned.

Assist PSC lab assistants and staff with maintenance and upkeep of lab and communal areas, to include sweeping, moping, dusting etc.

Wash, rinse, dry and store laboratory glassware in designated storage areas.

Perform routine housekeeping tasks to maintain laboratory, preparation, and stockroom areas in a clean and orderly condition.

Abide by the policies and procedures published in the Board of Regents Policies and College Policies & Procedures.

Contribute to a safe educational & working environment.

Adhere to established safety and health procedures and practices for the purpose of providing injury and illness prevention for self and others.

Complete quarterly health and safety training pursuant to OCCC's established safety and health procedures and practices.

Participate in all applicable OCCC emergency, evacuation and shelter in place drills and be prepared to take action and assist others in taking appropriate action should a health or safety emergency occur.
