Professor/Reader in Cyber Security

Job description

Permanent, full time

We are seeking to appoint a Professor or Reader in Cyber Security to join the Department of Computer Science at the University of Huddersfield. This exciting strategic appointment offers the opportunity to shape the future direction of Cyber Security research and education within a growing and ambitious Department. We welcome applications from established Professors and from outstanding Readers who can demonstrate a clear trajectory towards Professorial standing within a short period following appointment.

The Department of Computer Science is an ambitious and growing academic community with strengths across Computing, Cyber Security and Intelligent Systems, Information Systems and Games Development. Our research addresses real-world challenges across areas including cyber security, autonomous and intelligent systems, sustainable computing, digital twinning, applied artificial intelligence and digital innovation. The Department has made significant progress in research quality and income over the last decade, with increasing numbers of internationally recognised outputs, growing research funding and a strong doctoral community as we prepare for REF 2029.

You will provide academic leadership in Cyber Security and help shape the future development of our research portfolio. Working closely with the Head of Department, Subject Area Leaders and research teams, you will strengthen research quality, support the development of externally funded projects, enhance research impact and contribute significantly to the Department's preparation for REF 2029, including supporting the development of the Unit of Assessment. The Department is also undertaking a major transformation of its academic portfolio, and you will play an important role in ensuring our programmes remain at the forefront of cyber security, digital resilience and emerging technologies.

With a PhD in Cyber Security, Computer Science or a closely related discipline, you will have an established track record of research excellence, publication and external engagement appropriate to your career stage. You will have experience of securing research funding, supervising doctoral researchers and developing productive collaborations with academic, industrial and public-sector partners.

You will bring the vision and leadership required to develop research activity, support colleagues and contribute to an inclusive and ambitious research culture. Experience of research assessment exercises, research environment development, impact generation or Unit of Assessment leadership would be particularly valuable. Applicants at Reader level should be able to demonstrate a clear trajectory towards Professorial appointment through research leadership, funding success, international recognition and academic achievement.

The University is deeply committed to equality and diversity for all its students and staff.  We seek to be diverse and inclusive, supporting individuals and groups to fulfil their potential and nurture a sense of belonging.  We strive to be an accessible, inclusive employer, removing barriers for all.  Find out more about our approach to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, including our commitments and accreditations as a Disability Confident Leader, Stonewall Top 100 Employer, Athena Swan Silver Award holder and Race Equality Charter Bronze Award holder.

Informal enquiries are welcome to Professor Andrew Crampton, Head of Department of Computer Science, at [email protected].

If you are a current student at the University, you are welcome to apply for part-time roles of 16 hours or less per week, unless you are a part-time postgraduate student, in which case you can also apply for full time roles, subject to any visa requirements.
