Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/d) Development of a Mid-Bandgap Perovskite

Cell for Triple-Junction Solar Cells

Reference No.: SE 2026/12

Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) conducts cutting-edge research on energy materials and operates one of Europe's most advanced research infrastructures, the BESSY II synchrotron. The Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells Department develops metal halide perovskite solar cells and has achieved several world- record efficiencies in recent years for perovskite/silicon (32.5%) and perovskite/CIGS (24.2%) tandem solar cells. Building on these achievements, we are developing perovskite-based triple-junction solar cells to further increase power conversion efficiency. Initial results demonstrating an efficiency of 27% were recently published in Joule (DOI:10.1016/j.joule.2026.102575). This position focuses on investigating the film formation and crystallization of co-evaporated mid-bandgap perovskites and integrating them into high-efficiency triple-junction solar cells. To strengthen our international and interdisciplinary team, we are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with experience in perovskite solar cells.

Your Tasks
  • Co-Evaporation of perovskites with a bandgap of 1.52 eV to 1.45 eV
  • Compositional engineering, film analysis and device characterization using ex-situ and in-situ structural and spectroscopic characterization methods
  • Manufacturing of perovskite single-junction and perovskite/perovskite/silicon triple-junction solar cells
  • Coordinating development work and experiments in cooperation within HZB and other institutes as well as industrial partners
  • Publication of the scientific results at international conferences and peer reviewed journals as well as project proposal writing and acquisition of new third party funded projects
  • Your Profile
  • Completed Ph.D. in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related field

  • Strong knowledge of semiconductor technology and the physics of multi- junction solar cells

  • Hands-on experience in the fabrication of thin films and perovskite-based multi-junction solar cells
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills
  • Passion for solar cell research, with a strong commitment to reliability, efficiency, and teamwork
  • Proficiency in either German or English at C1 level, with a good command of the other language
  • Your Benefits

At Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin, you will benefit from a collaborative international environment, state-of-the-art research facilities, and a wide range of benefits to support your scientific career:

  • The opportunity to contribute to the development of innovative materials and technological solutions for a climate-neutral future in cooperation with leading international researchers
  • Flexible working hours and the possibility to work remotely
  • Career-enhancing networking opportunities, individual guidance, and support through our Graduate Center and Postdoc Office
  • 30 days of vacation per year and attractive remuneration according to the collective agreement for the public sector (TVöD Bund), plus company pension plan
  • Advisory services on family and career matters through our Office for Work & Life
  • Subsidy for the public transport “Deutschlandticket Job” and exclusive employee discounts
  • Relocation support from non-EU countries
  • German and English courses for all proficiency level
  • Fixed term contract for 24 months. The salary is based on the Collective Agreement for the German Public Service (TVöD-Bund).
