FRZG-6 Postdoctoral research position on developing TCAD models for 2D materials-based devices including the effects of grain boundaries

Contract: Full Time/ Fixed Term

Tyndall National Institute invites applications to a 12 month, full time research position in the Nanoelectronic Materials and Devices group on two- dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). TMDs, such as MoS2 and WS2, are layered materials that can be as thin as one-layer (~0.5 nm).

Grain boundary (GB) is a typical defect that exists in large-scale grown 2D TMD films, which has complex and diverse impacts on the electronic properties of the material.

Purpose of Role

The research project is to develop further understanding of the role of GBs in TMDs on the carrier transport through the TMD channel. The role requires a strong background in using Synopsys Sentaurus TCAD tools for modelling nanoelectronic devices, in close collaboration with experimental teams. As part of this role, the researcher will take training and development opportunities at Tyndall and UCC to drive their wider training and development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead research on developing TCAD models for 2D TMD-based nanoelectronic devices by integrating provided first-principles calculated parameters
  • Report to the project PI on a weekly basis
  • Deliver high quality research outputs and publish results in highest quality scientific and technical publications
  • Apply to relevant funding calls, e.g., Irish Research Council (IRC) and Science Foundation Ireland-IRC Pathway, to secure longer-term support for their research activities
  • Mentor and support of PhD students and new postdoctoral researchers, as needed
  • Promote Open Science within the group
  • Demonstrate a clear commitment to personal and career development
  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement (EPE) activities, as required
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system and with the required Health and Safety standards
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post
  • Essential Criteria

  • A PhD degree in a relevant technical discipline – electronics, physics, materials science
  • Background experience in Synopsys Sentaurus TCAD modelling tool through employing accurate material properties
  • Background knowledge on TCAD modelling of 2D materials
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with other researchers and research teams, particularly experimental teams
  • Track record in publishing high quality scientific publications
  • Commitment to personal training and development
  • Desirable Criteria

  • Evidence of creative skills/creativity
  • Background experience in density functional theory (DFT) calculations of 2D materials will be significantly desirable
  • Project/programme management
  • Strong report writing skills
  • Excellent communication skills to interact with a range of researchers, including experimental teams
  • Commitment to Open Science, e.g. open access publications, codes and/or research data
  • Evidence of entrepreneurial experience
  • Tyndall National institute has a proactive entrepreneurial culture and we welcome applications from candidates who possess entrepreneurial and creative skills/experience, including the creation of technology start-ups.

    What we offer

  • Individual Development Plans: Staff work with their managers to create detailed career “roadmaps” that take into account their interests and aspirations as well as the business needs of their Centre and the Institute
  • Learning & Development Opportunities: Staff can take advantage of learning and development opportunities, including leadership and management development skills, project management, industry and job specific learning, including general business, finance, and technology skills
  • Support for preparation of competitive research proposals
  • Opportunities for mentoring and day-to-day technical supervision of PhD students in the group
  • Opportunities for outreach and public engagement activities
  • Appointment may be made on the IUA Scale for Postdoctoral Researcher €42,781 - €49,177 pa. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.

The successful applicant is expected to start as soon as they are offered the position. Reasonable time to apply for Irish visa, if needed, is acceptable.

Informal enquiries can be made in confidence to Dr Farzan Gity ([email protected]) or Dr Lida Ansari ([email protected]).
