About This OpportunityThis is an exciting opportunity to join UQ's Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation to contribute to the development of innovative approaches to exploit genetic variation and accelerate the improvement of legume grain crops for Australia, such as chickpea, faba bean and lentil. In this position, you will develop and apply innovative breeding approaches and contribute to UQ's leading AI-guided breeding pipeline, to rapidly stack high- value haplotypes for a range of traits into elite germplasm. This will require the integration of several technologies, such as genomics, machine learning, genetic simulation and speed breeding. This is a unique opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow or Research Fellow to learn from leaders in the field and to further develop their expertise and research profile.
Key responsibilities will include:
Research
Level A : Quantitative genetics and genomics, your role involves producing high-quality research outputs consistent with discipline norms. This includes publishing or exhibiting in reputable outlets. Additionally, you will actively participate in applications for competitive research funding, collaborate with industry and academic partners, and contribute to knowledge transfer through translation and commercialisation of intellectual property.
Level B: additional to the above you will also develop an independent or team research program that achieves national recognition and impact. You will contribute to the field by producing high-quality research outputs, including publications in national research journals and other refereed outlets. You will actively participate in applications for competitive research funding, collaborate on joint research projects, and work towards transferring knowledge and technology to research end users. Drawing upon best practice research methodologies will be essential in your role.
Supervision and Researcher Development
Level A : you will contribute to the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students working on crop breeding or genetics projects. This involves demonstrating personal effectiveness in supervision, managing researcher capability and skill, and providing feedback and coaching. Additionally, you will oversee research support staff throughout the employee lifecycle, ensuring adherence to University policies and procedures. Promptly addressing conflicts and grievances is also essential.
Level B : additional to the above, your role involves personal effectiveness in supervision, management, and researcher skill development. You will facilitate engagement opportunities for Higher Degree by Research supervisees, provide feedback, coaching, and professional development to your team, and manage research support staff in accordance with University policies. Promptly addressing conflicts and grievances is also part of your responsibilities.
Citizenship and Service
Level A : you are expected to demonstrate citizenship behaviours aligned with UQ values. This includes actively participating in priority activities for the unit, providing support to colleagues during their absences, and contributing to internal service roles and administrative processes. You will also collaborate externally by cultivating relationships with industry, government departments, professional bodies, and the wider community.
Level B : at this level it is also expected that you show leadership by mentoring others, collaborating actively, and participating in priority activities for the unit. Additionally, efficiently manage internal service roles. Beyond the immediate organization unit, actively cultivate relationships with industry, government departments, professional bodies, and the wider community to foster external links and partnerships.

This is a full-time (100%), fixed-term position for up to 3 years at Academic level A or B. The full-time equivalent base salary at the different levels will be in the range of:
Level A: $77,324.85 - $102,945.12, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $90,470.08 - $120,445.79 annually.
Level B: $108,201.26 - $128,201.75, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $126,595.47 - $149,996.05 annually.
As this role is covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases in line with the Enterprise Agreement.
