    About This Opportunity

Engaging the over 50s to ensure the sustainability of our blood supply.

Australian Red Cross Lifeblood is responsible for the collection, processing and distribution of blood and blood products to the Australian community. Lifeblood's activities are underpinned by world-leading, goal-oriented research and the loyal support of volunteer, non-remunerated blood donors. Lifeblood faces ongoing challenges to ensure the sufficiency of the blood supply as our population ages and the demand for blood-product derived treatments increases. Donors aged over 50 donate more regularly with fewer adverse events than young donors yet comprise only a small proportion of donors. In this ARC Linkage funded collaboration between the University of Queensland, Australian Red Cross Lifeblood, and Silverchain, we will use quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate how those aged over 50 understand and engage with blood donation in the context of ageing, and how their involvement can be managed to maintain psychosocial wellbeing. By the end of this program of work we aim to have produced tailored, validated resources that may significantly benefit Australia by effectively engaging older adults to ensure the sustainability of the blood supply.

This is an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to assist us in implementing all phases of this ARC Linkage grant. The project investigators are Professor Barbara Masser and Dr Theresa Scott (The University of Queensland), Dr. Rachel Thorpe (Lifeblood) and Professor Tanya Davison (Silverchain). The successful applicant will play a major role in this comprehensive, large-scale research program involving both quantitative (e.g., experiments, surveys) and qualitative (e.g., interviews, co-design) research. This will include designing research materials, data collection and analysis, staff training and the preparation and presentation of reports and research findings to a variety of audiences.

The successful applicant will work closely with the research team and other stakeholders from Lifeblood. The appointee will be required to work for 100% of the appointment on the research program and will be based in Brisbane and employed through the University of Queensland.

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate with the project team on the coordination, management and conduct of the research project.

  • Participate directly in quantitative and qualitative research design and implementation, including preparation of ethics applications, protocol documents, ethics submissions and data management. Review and draw upon best practice research methodologies.

  • Prepare research reports, presentations, publications and progress reports and participate in regular meetings to discuss project objectives, methodology and outcomes.

  • Work collaboratively with participants engaged in the project as well as employees of Lifeblood as required.

  • Contribute to the effective supervision of Honours students, Higher Degree by Research students, and research assistants (as appropriate).

  • Manage supervisee performance and conduct by providing coaching, feedback and training through probation, annual performance appraisal and regular meetings with employees.

  • Begin to develop external links and partnerships by cultivating relationships with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.

  • This is a research focused position. Further information can be found by viewing UQ's Criteria for Academic Performance.

This is a part-time (up to 60% FTE), fixed-term position for 3 years.

At Academic level A, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $75,808- $100,926, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $88,696 - $118,084 annually. As this role is covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases – at least once a year.

The greater benefits of joining the UQ community are broad: from being part of a Group of Eight university, to recognition of prior service with other Australian universities, up to 26 weeks of paid parental leave, 17.5% annual leave loading and genuine career progression opportunities via the academic promotions process.
