Founded in 1894, City, University of London is a global university committed to academic excellence with a focus on business and the professions and an enviable central London location.

City attracts around 20,000 students (over 40% postgraduate level) from more than 150 countries and staff from over 75 countries.

In the last decade, City has almost tripled the proportion of its total academic staff producing world-leading or internationally excellent research. During this period, City has made significant investments in its academic staff, its estate and its infrastructure and continues to work towards realizing its vision of being a leading global university.

The culture at City is built on our shared core values, which means that all employees are expected to behave according to our values: “We care, We learn, We act.”

Background

The Department of Engineering is a multi-disciplinary centre of research and education located in the heart of the vibrant London City. It is the first institute in the UK to offer aeronautical engineering programmes and is known for its excellent links with industries in engineering disciplines.

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on deep learning-coupled finite element simulation for solid mechanics problems, funded by UKRI Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) with EPFL, Switzerland and the University of Florida as international partners/collaborators. The project involves research into developing novel computational simulation tools utilizing deep learning and finite element method for solid mechanics problems in general (fracture simulation, in particular).

The successful candidate will work closely with the PI, Dr Sathiskumar Anusuya Ponnusami and his research team and collaborators at EPFL and Florida. The project will offer an environment to work on exciting interdisciplinary research while bridging Artificial Intelligence architectures with Finite element method and mechanics

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing new frameworks that combine state-of-the-art deep learning models with finite element simulations with a focus on solid mechanics and failure evolution problems.

They will also contribute to research administration, dissemination of research findings at renowned computational mechanics conferences and journals and may undertake some limited teaching as part of the training.

Person Specification

The post holder will have a relevant PhD in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, preferably in computational solid/structural or material mechanics, together with experience of undertaking research in artificial intelligence algorithms (deep learning) for mechanics. A good understanding of finite element method and their numerical implementation is required. Prior experience in extensive programming in FEA or mechanics problems is desirable.

Additional Information

City offers a sector-leading salary, pension scheme and benefits including a comprehensive package of staff training and development.

The role is available immediately but it is expected that reasonable time will take for the starting date following the employment checks and/or visa procedures, if the shortlisted candidate is international and requires sponsorship.

Closing date for applications: 21st April 2024 at 11:59pm
