Job description

Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS)

These full time posts are available from January 2025 to 31 December 2025.

The post

The Faculty wishes to recruit two Postdoctoral Research Associates to support the work of the Digital Archive of the Middle East (DAME) Project, a joint research project between the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies (IAIS) at the University of Exeter and the Institute for International and Area Studies (IIAS) at Tsinghua University.

The successful applicants will be expected to undertake research drawing upon the archival materials housed at the University that will lead to a publication.

About you

You will have demonstrable expertise and experience in conducting archival research on the Middle East. Of particular interest are candidates with research experience on Palestine or the Gulf region. You will also be engaged and familiar with contemporary debates around the ethics of archival research and the potential and limitations of digitisation as a research methodology.

You will:

  • possess a relevant PhD (or nearing completion) or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study
  • have an excellent level of proficiency in a language of the region
  • Please ensure you read the Job Description and Person Specification for full details of this role.

    What we can offer you

  • Freedom (and the support) to pursue your intellectual interests and to work creatively across disciplines to produce internationally exciting research
  • Support teams that understand the University wide research and teaching goals and partner with our academics accordingly
  • An Innovation, Impact and Business directorate that works closely with our academics providing specialist support for external engagement and development
  • Our Exeter Academic initiative supporting high performing academics to achieve their potential and develop their career

  • A multitude of staff benefits including sector leading benefits around maternity, adoption and shared parental leave (up to 26wks full pay), Paternity leave (up to 6wks full pay), and a Fertility Treatment Policy

  • A beautiful campus set in the heart of stunning Devon
