Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Deformation Monitoring

Central Oxford

We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Deformation Monitoring to join the Civil Engineering research group at the Department of Engineering Science (central Oxford). The post is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and is fixed-term for 8 months starting as soon as possible.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development of point cloud deformation monitoring algorithms, which can be used to conduct full-field displacement, strain and crack monitoring of structures using laser scan or photogrammetry point cloud data. The post-holder will aim to improve the generality of existing algorithms and optimise their computational efficiency; the improved research code will be packaged into largely automated and easy- to-use software. The project will also involve the application of the developed algorithms in a site application as a part of the Athlone Main Drainage Scheme, where deformations in masonry buildings will be monitored during a nearby tunnel drive. The post-holder will be required to instrument the buildings and collect and analyse the data that is required to validate the research developments, in collaboration with our project partner Ward & Burke. This will require spending part of the project in the offices of Ward & Burke and on site.

You will hold a relevant PhD/Dphil or be near completion together with relevant experience and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to work within established research programmes. The ability to manage own academic research and associated activities with previous experience of contributing to publications / presentations together with the ability to contribute ideas for new research projects and research income generation is also required. You will have excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results, and represent the research group at meetings

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Sinan Acikgoz (email: [email protected])
