EP-31 Postdoctoral position on cavity quantum optics with site-controlled quantum dots

Contract: Full Time/ Specified Purpose

Tyndall National Institute at University College Cork invites applications for a Postdoctoral opportunity.

The Epitaxy and Physics of Nanostructures (EPN) group, Tyndall National Institution and University College Cork fund a Postdoc position on “on cavity quantum optics with site-controlled quantum dots “.

The Epitaxy and Physics of Nanostructures group is a well-established research team in Ireland addressing epitaxial growth of devices and quantum structures. E.g., quantum technology applications of III-V site-controlled quantum dots (see e.g. Gediminas Juska, et al. “Towards quantum dot based arrays of entangled photon emitters”, Nature Photonics 7, 527 (2013); T. H. Chung, et al. “Selective carrier injection into patterned arrays of pyramidal quantum dots for entangled photon light-emitting diodes”, Nature Photonics 10, 782 (2016)).

Moreover, EPN is part of the Tyndall quantum centre: Tyndall Quantum Computer Engineering Centre (QCEC).

The project is funded by an SFI Frontiers award, centred on quantum technology applications. The project is focused on the development of novel semiconductor cavities capable of enhancing photon extraction and photon quality for site- controlled QDs. Pyramidal quantum dots are a very unique and specific system with its own challenges for developing cavity designs. For this reason we are seeking enthusiastic researchers with a strong background in single quantum dots, and specifically with strong experience on the optical properties of site-controlled dots and characterization of photonic cavities.

Key Responsibilities

  • The main focus of this position is the development and the optical analysis/characterization of III-V and dielectric photonic cavities centred around single and coupled Pyramidal quantum dots.
  • The postdoc position will also involve collaborating with the rest of the EPN group on several other projects (aside of the Frontiers grant which also encompasses two other PhD positions), specifically on photonic chips, III-V material development and in general cryogenic optical characterization.
  • The successful candidate is also expected to engage broadly in PhD mentoring when possible.
  • The group is currently expanding its cryogenic equipment and the successful candidate is expected to strongly engage into developing and installing the new equipment.
  • Other responsibilities:

  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
  • The Postdoc level position is open for candidates of EU and non EU nationalities. We welcome applications from talented candidates with strong motivation and experimental skills. The appointment is for two years. with in general the possibility of further career development as specified by Tyndall career development opportunities.

The group is led by Dr. E. Pelucchi.

    Essential Criteria

  • Postdoctoral applicants must hold a PhD in Physics/ Photonic Engineering or a related discipline before the start of the contract.
  • Postdoctoral applicants must hold a minimum of two years Postdoc experience in the QD field or a closely related discipline before the start of the contract.
  • They should have a rich CV and experience in quantum optics and photonics.
  • Desirable Criteria

  • Evidence of entrepreneurial experience
  • Evidence of creative skills/creativity
  • Highly self-motivated applicants with strong experimental attitude.
  • Tyndall National institute has a proactive entrepreneurial culture and we welcome applications from candidates who possess entrepreneurial and creative skills/experience, including the creation of technology start-ups.

Informal enquiries concerning these positions can be made to Dr. Emanuele Pelucchi ([email protected])

Appointment will be made on the Tyndall/UCC PostDoctoral researcher scale € 42,781- € 49,177 per annum. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.

Closing date of applications is 12th February, 2024
