Post-doctoral Scientist

Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences, John Radcliffe Hospital, Headington, Oxford, OX3 9DU

We are looking for an enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher looking to develop an independent research career is required for a cutting-edge program of research to systematically investigate calcium channel antagonists as a class of drugs with potential for disease modification in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Several members of the class of CCBs will be assessed for phenotypical modification and target engagement across a range of cellular models (an ESC-derived motor neuron model of ALS, iPSC-models based on a number of ALS determining mutations). Specifically, we aim to 1) Establish whether the effect of CCBs (for which we have preliminary evidence) is a class effect, 2) determine the specific targets of calcium channel blockers, which mediate improved survival in our cellular models, 3) in collaboration with colleagues in Edinburgh extend testing to mouse and zebrafish models. The ultimate goal is to select CCBs for prioritization in experimental medicine studies in humans with ALS and to develop drug specific biomarkers for use in these studies.

Some of your duties will include developing, establishing, and pursuing appropriate analytical protocols (cell culture, imaging, biochemical) and techniques to support research for the project and developing research questions, testing hypotheses and analysing scientific data from a variety of sources, reviewing and refining working hypotheses as appropriate. As well as supervision of graduate students, acting as a source of information and advice to other members of the group on scientific protocols and experimental techniques, liaison with collaborators and manage own academic research and administrative activities. This involves small scale project management, to co-ordinate multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines.

It is essential that you hold or be close to award of a doctorate (PhD/DPhil) in Neuroscience, have a proven track record in cell culture (particularly iPSC and ESC-derived neuronal cell culture) and experience in molecular biology techniques.

It is desirable that you have experience of research in neurodegeneration and experience of grant applications.

Please see the below 'Job Description' for further details on the responsibilities and selection criteria, as well as further information about the university and how to apply.

The post is full time, fixed term until 27th March 2027

Only applications received before 12.00 midday on Monday 4th March will be considered.
