Position Summary
The APC Microbiome Ireland (APC) was formed in 2003 with funding from Taighde Éireann - Research Ireland and over the last 20 years APC Microbiome Ireland has established itself as the leading global centres in gut microbiota and gut inflammation research. The scientific organisation of the institute consists of several integrated research themes including human research in microbiome science which are supported by multiple shared advanced core technology platforms. It represents a seamless collaboration between researchers at University College Cork, clinicians at Mercy and Cork University Hospital and engineers at Tyndall Institute.
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Postdoctoral Researcher to coordinate the processing of all histology samples from endoscopy suites at CUH and MUH as well as surgical operating theatres for research into intestinal barrier assessment, support digital profiling for CyTOF and single cell transcriptomics and periodically process samples for metagenomic sequencing. The aim is to integrate research across discipline boundaries, thus stimulating innovation and accelerating research towards sustainable benefits and value for health and society.
The position will be based at APC Microbiome Ireland and UCC Clinical Science CUH. The post combines clinical IBD with scientific research. You will be able to work in a well-functioning multidisciplinary team.

Required Skills:
• Experience in handling human tissue samples including microtome and cryotome sectioning, tissue specimen fixing, embedding, sectioning, staining and mounting
• Knowledge of both biopsy and resected tissue orientation for FFPE/cryo block preparation and sectioning using microtome and cryotome respectively
• Ability to work in a team and carry out planned experiments including diagnostic team at the CUH Histopathology Department
• Be responsible for performance, maintenance, condition, quality control and record keeping of all instruments within assigned areas of the laboratory.
Desired skills:
• Experience in a hospital-based Histology Laboratory
• Familiarity with confocal microscopy
• Experience in Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and special staining techniques like manual immunofluorescence and routine H&E staining.
• Experience with molecular and cell biology techniques e.g. DNA/ RNA extraction, FACS is highly desirable
• Familiarity with the Leica Bond staining system or other automated stainers
