Description

IMMEDIATE VACANCY: HANA - FULL-TIME/TEMPORARY Note: Employees appointed to temporary positions may also gain membership in the civil service upon satisfactory completion of an initial probation period of at least six months. Once you become a member of the civil service, you become eligible to apply for promotion and transfer opportunities to permanent as well as other temporary positions.

Assists pipefitters in the installation, maintenance and repair of water mains and pipelines; and performs other related duties as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This is the entry level class in the Water Service series. This class is distinguished by the performance of a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks in assisting skilled pipefitters in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water mains, pipelines and appurtenances.

Examples of Duties

The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.

  • Cuts, threads, bends, and reams pipes by means of hand tools or a power machine.
  • Cleans and cares for tools, heats lead, digs and backfills trenches.
  • Uses pneumatic tools in the breaking of pavement, digging, and backfilling, and helps handle heavy pipes and fittings.
  • Taps mains; flushes and cleans mains, reservoirs, and tanks.
  • Installs meter boxes, may repair water meters, may read water meters and make collections as required.
  • May assist in the water quality functions such as performing minor maintenance and repair of chlorination systems, replacing chlorine cylinders, performing chlorine residual, turbidity and bacti sampling.
  • May drive a light truck.
  • Minimum Qualification Requirements

    Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of experience in assisting a skilled pipefitter or plumber in the installation of water or sewer mains, lines and appurtenances.

    License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license (Type 3). As applicable to specific positions, the possession of a valid Commercial Driver License (CDL), a current State Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate, and a Hazardous Material endorsement prior to the completion of probation.

    Knowledge of: practices, tools and materials used in the pipefitting trade; methods of caring for mechanical tools; and work safety practices.

    Ability to: operate pipefitting tools and equipment; do mechanical work; perform manual work; understand and follow oral and written instructions; perform arithmetic computations; read and understand simple construction drawings.

    Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.

    Deferred Compensation Plan Eligible employees may participate in the Island Savings Plan (a deferred compensation plan as provided under Section 457 of the Internal Revenue Code.)     Flex Spending Plan Eligible employees can also participate in the County's Flexible Spending plan, a way to set aside a portion of pay, before taxes, to pay for qualifying dependent care or medical expenses.

    Leave Sharing The County's leave sharing program allows employees to donate accumulated vacation leave credits to a qualified fellow employee who has a serious personal illness or injury.
