GEAR UP Utah College Access Advisor Partnership with USU Teacher Education and Leadership Department and Cache County School District.

This is a part-time position. Total hours are 18-22 hours per week working primarily 9-1pm per day at one of the high schools (Position available at Sky View High School, Green Canyon High School and Mountain Crest High School).working primarily 8-3pm per day at one of the high schools (positions available are at Mountain Crest High and Green Canyon High). There will be occasional times you will work outside of your assigned work hours for family events and field trips but overall, 90% of the hours are spent at your assigned school, and only 10% at outside locations.

The rate of pay is $15 per hour. The official start date will be determined at time of hire. The end date of the position will be June 1, 2024, unless otherwise discussed at time of hire.

Advisors give support to students in order to be successful in high school and progress towards graduation and attending college. This includes weekly/bi- weekly individual mentor meetings, field trips, and scholarship/FAFSA help. Success is more than just grades, and the mentoring side of this job is vital to this position. As an advisor, you are expected to consistently meet with each student to discuss their progress in terms of school which includes: grades, attendance, career exploration, etc.

About GEAR UP: GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a federally funded grant program. Its goal is to increase college awareness for low-income students and their families and to help students develop the skills and preparation necessary to pursue education after high school. GEAR UP works collaboratively with schools, parents and community organizations to help students build the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to prepare for college. GEAR UP provides staff and funding resources in a comprehensive program that:

  • Helps students with academic, social and life skills
  • Reaches out to parents with college knowledge and awareness information
  • Builds community partnerships
  • ACA Variable Hours
  • US Work Authorization is required
  • Criminal Background check is required as a condition of employment

    Responsibilities
  • Create positive working relationships within the school with the counseling, administration, and UCAC teams
  • Meet one-on-one with the program director to establish goals and maintain relationships with school partnerships
  • Assist in one-on-one mentoring, tutoring, career exploration, helping school counselors, and FAFSA and Scholarship applications
  • Documenting information such as what is discussed with students and tracking how often you meet with them
  • Workshops, family events, and community events set up, clean up, and planning
  • Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience working with secondary students in an academic setting and/or experience providing mentoring/advising services
  • High School Diploma
  • Associates Degree or Current College Student
  • MUST be proficient in Microsoft Suites (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Friendly and personable with good energy
  • Strong interpersonal skills, especially in working within a team environment
  • Excellent time management and communication skills
  • Must have access to a reliable transportation to perform essential job functions
  • Must be available during school hours (8-3pm, though the schedule within those hours is flexible)
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Someone who has been a previous GEAR UP student
  • Someone who majored (or is currently studying) in: psychology, social work, counseling, educational advising
  • Spanish-speaking
