Background of the recruitment and description of the project Background of the recruitment and description of the project Division of Agrobiological Science consists of 15 laboratories: Insect DX, Plant Breeding, Crop Science, Plant Production Physiology, Plant Pathology, Horticultural Sciences, Zoology, Insect Genome Sciences, Entomology, Insect Pathology and Microbial Control, Insect Natural Enemies, Bioresources and Management, Agroecology, Sanitary Insect Science, Creative Science for Insect Industries and Insect Food Science. The Laboratory of Insect DX was newly established in the Division of Agrobiological Science, Department of Bioresource Sciences in accordance with the FY2023 budget request for the establishment of an education and research organization. This position will be assigned to the Insect taxonomy Unit of the Insect Science and Creative Entomology Center, Faculty of Agricultureto realize their mission. In realizing the goals of the department and the division concerned, it is important to establish sustainable and stable supply methods for agricultural biological resources and to protect and manage biological resources. Insect taxonomy has long been a driving force in biodiversity research, and with the growing momentum of the SDGs, it has recently been attracting renewed attention. The importance of the vast amount of biological information accumulated through past research is widely recognized as a treasure trove of unutilized resources, especially by researchers outside Japan. In order for Kyushu University to develop into a global core that will lead the next generation of insect science research, it is essential to build a foundation for the application and use of this taxonomic knowledge through DX and to develop education and research on future environmental design.

Work content and job description We intend to hire a professor who will focus on developing education and research in:

1) Enhancing insect value with the aid of genome editing technique and insect-parasitic microorganisms and their application to food and livestock feed. 2) Development of oral vaccines and livestock feed additives made from insects.

Since the field of insect food science is the first research field in Japan, we also welcome researchers who have a high achievement using other biological resources that can be developed into education and research in either 1) and 2) above, and who have a strong will to carry out research devoted to insects after assuming the position.
