Nuffield Professor of Anaesthetic Science

The Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences (NDCN) and Pembroke College intend to appoint to the Nuffield Professorship of Anaesthetic Science with effect from 1 August 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter. The University of Oxford is one of a few leading centres internationally for research in anaesthetic science. Since 2008, anaesthetics has been fully integrated as a constituent Division of the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences. Since the Nuffield Chair was established in 1937, there have been six Nuffield Professors, most recently Professor Irene Tracey.

This post is available as either a clinical or a non-clinical position. If appointed to a clinical post you must be medically qualified and will be a clinician at NHS consultant/honorary consultant level.

The Nuffield Professor of Anaesthetic Science will provide academic leadership as Head of the Division of Anaesthetics within NDCN, conduct high quality research, and further develop (the University of) Oxford's portfolio of internationally competitive research in anaesthetic science.

You will bring a sustained track record of high-quality research in anaesthetic science, though publication in peer-reviewed journals, significant grant income, and national and international collaboration. You will have a strong vision for anaesthetic science, and a commitment to leadership of the Department that will help to extend its impact on health globally and training in the discipline. For an active clinician you must be medically qualified at NHS Consultant level, GMC registered and a Member, or Fellow, of the relevant Royal College.

The University of Oxford is a member of the Athena SWAN Charter to promote women in Science, Engineering, Technology and Medicine. The University holds an Athena SWAN silver award at institutional level, and the Nuffield Department of Population Health also holds an Athena SWAN silver award.

Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford.

Committed to equality and valuing diversity
