Summary of Job Duties:
The Process Engineer I - BEOL is responsible for developing, qualifying, optimizing, and sustaining semiconductor back-end-of-line (BEOL) process modules within the National Multi-User Silicon Carbide (MUSiC) Research and Fabrication Facility. The position will have primary engineering responsibility for BEOL capabilities including backside processing, metallization, wafer thinning and dicing, and selected packaging-related processes supporting silicon carbide device fabrication, research, prototyping, customer-sponsored projects, and low-volume manufacturing. While BEOL processing is the primary focus of this position, there will be front-end-of-line processing aid required during slow cycles or major infrastructure projects. Working under the direction of the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), the Process Engineer I - BEOL will develop and maintain robust, repeatable process modules; support installation, startup, commissioning, and qualification of BEOL equipment; execute process-development activities; troubleshoot process and equipment issues; and help transition new capabilities from development into routine operation.
The position will work closely with process integration, equipment, facilities, quality, research personnel, university researchers, industrial collaborators, and external equipment and materials suppliers. The engineer will establish process specifications, develop and maintain standard operating procedures, document process conditions and results, analyze process data, participate in continuous improvement activities, and support the implementation of statistical and quality controls appropriate for research, prototyping, and low-volume manufacturing environments.
This position may provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, technicians, interns, operators, and student researchers. This position requires regular work in a semiconductor cleanroom environment and may require occasional work outside normal business hours in support of fabrication schedules, equipment recovery, or operational and safety needs. This position is weather essential and may require being on call for emergency response. HAZMAT training will be provided and is required for this position.
Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- B.S. in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field from an accredited institution of higher education
- At least two years of semiconductor process engineering, product engineering, test engineering, advanced manufacturing, or closely related experience
- At least one year experience developing, qualifying, optimizing, or sustaining semiconductor or microelectronics manufacturing processes
- At least one year experience qualifying, optimizing, or sustaining semiconductor or microelectronics manufacturing process equipment
- At least one year experience troubleshooting semiconductor processes and identifying root causes of process variation or failure
- At least two years experience preparing and maintaining process documentation, standard operating procedures, work instructions, or technical reports
- U.S. Citizenship required due to access to controlled facilities and environments
Applicable equivalencies may be considered on the above qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications:
- M.S. in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field from an accredited institution of higher education
- At least five years of semiconductor or microelectronics process-development experience
- At least five years experience qualifying, optimizing, or sustaining semiconductor or microelectronics manufacturing process equipment
- At least two years experience supporting ISO, semiconductor quality systems, or controlled manufacturing environments
- At least two years experience mentoring technicians, junior engineers, interns, or student researchers
