Position title: Miga Lab: Junior Specialist

Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, Represented Specialist Series Fiscal Year. “Off-scale salaries”, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. A reasonable estimate for this position is $51,300 - $54,600.

Percent time: Full-time (100%)

Anticipated start: As soon as possible after the initial review of applications.

Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position description

Karen Miga in the Department of Biomolecular Engineering at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a research specialist. The hiring unit, within the Biomolecular Engineering Department at UCSC focuses on research and education at the intersection of biology, computer science, and engineering, to drive advances in areas such as genomics, synthetic biology, bioinformatics, and biomolecular modeling. Under the direction of Assistant Professor Dr. Miga, the research specialist will contribute towards developing new methods of repeat annotation and evolutionary studies across cohorts of high quality genome assemblies.

An ideal candidate would have general knowledge in molecular biology and genomics, and be familiar with basic bioinformatic methods and formats (i.e.,Python, Linux/Bash, R, AnVIL/Terra, Git, Docker, Pandas, Biopython).

Special consideration will be provided to candidates with any of the following areas of expertise:

  • Knowledge of genomics studies involving satellite DNA.
  • Use of common tools of repetitive DNA analysis (RepeatMasker, TRF, ULTRA,RepeatModeler, etc.)
  • Expert use of alpha satellite annotation programs and pipelines (HumAS- HMMER,PERCON, CentromereArchitect, HORmon, etc.)

    Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • Baccalaureate degree (or an equivalent foreign degree) in biology, bio- engineering, biotechnology, bioinformatics, and/or quantitative sciences (e.g. statistics, mathematics, or computational sciences).
  • A minimum of two years of experience in bioinformatics.
  • Experience in repeat annotation programs and pipelines (e.g., HumAS- HMMER,PERCON, CentromereArchitect, and HORmon).
