Maxwell Centre Administrator

We are looking for an Administrator to work within the new Maxwell Centre, providing support to its varied community, including academics, students, industrial partners and liaison officers. This position is an excellent opportunity for a driven, conscientious individual to develop their skills and experience. The main aim of this role is to ensure the Maxwell Centre operation on the academia-industry interface runs smoothly and provide overall administrative support to its occupants and external stakeholders.

The Maxwell Centre is hosted in a £26M state of the art building in the heart of the West Cambridge campus. It operates from within the Physics department but is serving as a gateway to Cambridge Physical Sciences and Technology overall, linking through to several departments as well as outwards to industry and businesses of any size. This appointment will provide overarching administrative support for the Centre; in due course offering opportunities to be proactively involved in administration related initiatives and projects.

The role holder will:

  • act as one of the main points of contact for staff, visitors and external enquiries on matters regarding the Maxwell Centre,
  • organise meetings,
  • collect, manage and distribute information, including reporting,
  • make arrangements for visitors and new arrivals,
  • line-manage the Maxwell Centre Assistant Administrator and supervise other junior staff members and contractors working within the building,
  • assist Centre staff with purchases and finance management as well as help with various other tasks as required, commensurate with the grade.
  • The broad scope of this role provides excellent opportunities for personal and professional development, including learning new transferrable skills. This is an exciting and varied role that would suit an organised administrative generalist, willing to work in a busy environment, who is looking for a challenge and opportunity to develop. We are looking for someone who has the following demonstrable skills:

  • The aptitude to understand and follow processes as well as lead on continuous improvement and designing new processes;
  • The ability to prioritise and take ownership of tasks by managing their own workload and delegating as appropriate;
  • Excellent interpersonal as well as written and spoken communication skills; and ability to recognise and adapt style and format of communication to match various audiences and situations;
  • Ability to actively problem solve; and
  • Willingness to engage and learn.
  • For full details of the post and person specification, please see the Further Information.

    We welcome applications from individuals who wish to be considered for part- time working (0.8 FTE) or other flexible working arrangements.
