Abertay University is providing an exciting opportunity for an individual to undertake a Masters by Research (MbR) degree whilst also gaining technical work experience. The opportunity allows the successful candidate to carry out their research whilst also gaining valuable work experience working as a technician in their subject area. The post will be split based on 50% research and 50% paid work experience within the technical team. The research degree will be funded by the school for the successful applicant.

The opportunity to gain work experience whilst studying gives the successful applicant the unique ability to develop and enhance research skills and technical knowledge whilst completing their degree.

Study:

  • Undertake a postgraduate research Masters degree aligned to the individual's undergraduate degree programme and in an area of strategic importance to the School, delivering on requisite milestones for progression and completion.
  • As part of the recruitment process prospective candidates are expected to submit a research proposal which is relevant to their chosen field. Proposals must be submitted prior to application via the Abertay Postgraduate Research page, Developing Your Own Proposal found via; this link.
  • The candidate must submit their application with the intent to begin study in October 2022.
  • The candidate will only gain work experience once accepted onto the Masters by Research program.
  • Work Experience:

  • As part of a technical support team you will be involved in the preparation, delivery and development of practical class sessions.
  • Organise, set out and clear up practical class experiments.
  • Where appropriate demonstrate and advise staff and students on matters relating to Health and Safety, laboratory techniques and use of equipment.
  • Give advice on Health and Safety to personnel entering the laboratory and ensure compliance with Health and Safety regulations and laboratory rules are followed.
  • Support the writing and updating of risk assessments and chemical hazard databases
  • Support the development of practical class protocols and trial experiments in conjunction with the technical team leader, academic staff members and technicians.
  • Support the writing and amendment of class methods.
  • Coordinate disposal of equipment and maintain records
  • Ensure laboratories and preparation rooms are clean and tidy.
  • Maintain, clean and repair equipment and laboratory apparatus.
  • Work with colleagues on the regular service maintenance of high specification equipment
  • The post holder will be expected to be cooperative and flexible, undertaking such other duties as may be reasonably required of a member of technical staff in the University.
