Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, Academic Coordinator Fiscal Year. “Off- scale salaries”, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. A reasonable estimate for this position is $92,000- $110,000.
Percent time: Full-time (100%)

Position duration: Initial appointment will be for two years. Reappointment may be considered contingent upon the availability of work and appropriate funding. Position descriptionThe Institute for Social Transformation at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a managing director position. Rooted in the Social Sciences Division at UC Santa Cruz, the institute supports innovative scholarship that changes the world. The institute is a critical intellectual and social hub, connecting scholars across UC Santa Cruz and partners beyond the University, developing research-based solutions to urgent problems in the world. A central component of the institute's work is supporting community-engaged scholarship in multiple contexts, particularly through the work of our Campus + Community Center, which is housed within the institute and is dedicated to supporting ethical and mutually beneficial community-engaged scholarship, including research and teaching that is conducted in partnership with non-academic agencies and organizations in our local community, across the country, and even internationally. We anticipate the institute to continue to grow in size and complexity in the coming years and we seek a candidate who can readily support this expansion, including supporting the activities of the newly formed Campus + Community
Under the direction of the institute's faculty executive director and the Dean of Social Sciences, the managing director is the senior full-time academic appointee who oversees this dynamic and growing institute and is responsible for independent development and coordination of all aspects of institute operations. This includes:
Strategic leadership: Working with the institute faculty director, the managing director provides strategic leadership in planning and implementing all programmatic activities in the institute. This includes:
Fundraising: Working with the institute and Campus + Community Faculty Directors, the managing director actively seeks out and supports new funding opportunities and collaborative research frameworks on- and off-campus. This may include:
Communications: The managing director directs and oversees all aspects of the institute's communications, from web presence to external relations. This includes:
Event development and coordination: The managing director oversees all institute organized and affiliated events. This includes:
Research administration and financial management: The managing director oversees and further develops the organizational structure for the institute's financial and business operations, including the generation, management and reporting of institute budgets. This includes:
Institute Management: The managing director is responsible for personnel and program management at the institute, including Campus + Community. This includes:
The position requires extensive management experience, preferably in a higher education or research setting, with significant experience in financial stewardship. The position also requires excellent communication skills, which include the ability to speak publicly in a variety of forums and excellent writing skills in order to compose a variety of documents at a professional level.
Applicants with any of the following areas of experience are strongly encouraged to apply: expertise in community-engaged scholarship, and/or fundraising and philanthropic development; leadership and project management skills sufficient to coordinate multiple ongoing projects of significant complexity; demonstrated initiative and flexibility, along with demonstrated experience in planning, research, and problem solving sufficient to solve complex issues within a bureaucratic context; demonstrated technical skills, including the ability to learn and employ web-content management systems and databases; and/or the ability to work effectively with colleagues from diverse backgrounds.

Master's Degree or higher (or an equivalent foreign degree) in a social science discipline relevant to the advertised position and a minimum of ten years' experience in research, program development, management, and/or administration.
