About This Opportunity
The incumbent will provide HSW advice to Stakeholders in the Faculty of Science including School Managers and Heads of School along with providing support to the Senior Manager, HSW in the Faculty of Science. The role will manage Health Safety and Wellness by providing practical assistance, advice, and oversight in the areas of laboratory (including chemical, radiation and biosafety), and animal production, field and crop research safety along with compliance requirements relating to Biosecurity, Chemicals of Security Concern and provision of Scheduled Medicines and Poisons. The incumbent will be required to work across both St Lucia and Gatton campuses.
The position will assist in implementation of the UQ Health, Safety and Wellness Strategy 2022-2026 throughout the Faculty and promote the highest practicable standard of occupational health, safety and wellness, while supporting and encouraging a positive OHS culture, and facilitating compliance with legislation and national standards.
There are ten main responsibilities and functions of health, safety and wellness positions at UQ:
Supporting UQ health, safety and wellness governance and consultative mechanisms
Developing, managing and maintaining UQ's OHS management system
Facilitating risk management processes at UQ
Developing and delivering health, safety and wellness programs
Providing advice, information and services
Monitoring health, safety and wellness performance
Developing health, safety and wellness capability
Incident investigation
Engagement with regulators and stakeholders
Workers' compensation self-insurance, return to work.
Key responsibilities
Actively contribute to HSW programs within the Faculty of Science.
Serve as the primary HSW advisor to a designated school within Science.
Monitor HSW performance and provide advice for optimal safety outcomes.
Develop and implement systems for HSW information dissemination.
Conduct risk assessments and workplace inspections, recommend control measures.
Promote a reporting culture and assist in incident investigations.
Act as Controlled Substances Officer, ensuring compliance with regulations.
Manage chemical inventories, biosafety, and radiation safety requirements.
Coordinate First Aid training and emergency preparedness.
Oversee maintenance of safety equipment and provide fieldwork support.
This is a full-time (100%), continuing position.
At HEW level 8, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $106,838.31 - $119,780.70, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $125,000.82 - $140,143.42 annually.
About You
Essential
Postgraduate qualifications in occupational health and safety or the physical or biological sciences or related field, and/or extensive experience and management expertise, and/or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
At least 2-5 years practical laboratory bench experience in a biological/chemical research laboratory or aligned research discipline.
At least 3-4 years' experience in the management of HSW-related practices relevant to biological/chemical or agricultural research.
High level interpersonal and written and oral communication skills and the ability to establish cooperative working relationships throughout the University.
Desirable
Broad knowledge of radiation safety requirements.
Broad knowledge of agricultural work environment safety requirements
Current Work Health & Safety Officer certification from Workplace Health and Safety Queensland or higher level of safety training or willingness to obtain
Sound knowledge and practical understanding of the relevant legislation governing PC1, PC 2 and DAFF requirements along with safe use and storage of hazardous chemicals.
Experience with Field based research
Current First Aid certification or willingness to obtain

Vaccinations and Immunisation: It is a condition of employment for this role that if you are required now or in the future, to work or interact in Queensland Health clinical facility; or in an equivalent clinical health facility; or health care role; or will be required to perform work tasks that put you at risk of exposure to vaccine-preventable disease you are required to be immunised against, and remain immunised against, certain vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs), namely Q Fever and Tetanus, in accordance with the University's Vaccinations and Immunisation Guidelines (PPL 2.60.08). The employee is required to provide evidence of immunisation against VPDs.
