Position Title Manager, Government Relations

Department Gov't Rel & Comm Affairs - 116 Position Summary

The American Museum of Natural History is seeking a Manager, Government Relations, to join its Government Relations department within the division of Institutional Advancement. The department seeks to maximize the Museum's relationships with and funding from federal government agencies. The Manager will assist with developing and writing proposals to federal sources; working collaboratively with department staff, Museum educators and scientists to secure new and continued support; and contributing to related projects and initiatives.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Writing federal grant proposals, reports, and other materials.
  • Writing about the scientific and mathematical research done at AMNH.
  • Leading or serving as key member of proposal teams, writing drafts and preparing final documents for submission.
  • Creating annual submission plan.
  • Disseminating funding information to the Museum community.
  • Helping Museum education and scientific staff to identify sources and develop proposals.
  • Researching and reporting on federal trends and news.
  • Maintaining agency liaison.
  • Carrying out special projects and related assignments.
  • The expected salary range for the Manager, Government Relations is $55,000 – 65,000. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

    Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.

    Required Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate degree or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 5 years additional relevant experience in nonprofit educational, cultural, research or higher education institution.
  • Demonstrated record of success in proposal writing, particularly to federal science and education agencies.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills.
  • Excellent analytical, conceptualization, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to interpret budgets.
  • Ability to understand and express scientific and mathematical ideas and research; and science education.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, often under deadline and rapid turn around pressure.
  • Fast learner able to orient quickly to diverse education and science subjects.
