Maintenance Craftsperson (Electrical), Estate Management

Job description

Department
Estate Management design, repair, maintain and secure all campuses. We aim to provide a seamless service to all students, staff and visitors.

Covering a multitude of services, we are available to assist with any issue concerning the University estate and grounds

Duties of the Role
We are seeking an electrical craftsperson to work on electrical systems in accordance with the University of Essex LV policy. The post holder will be expected to diagnose and repair faults in both standard and complex electrical installations, plant, and equipment, and will undertake inspection and testing of both standard and complex LV electrical circuits and systems in compliance with the current BS 7671 Edition. We would be able to appoint either a Competent Person (CP) or Authorised Person (AP) to this vacancy. Part-qualified individuals with an NVQ Level 2 (or nearing completion) in Electrical Installations who wish to progress further will also be considered for the role at Grade 5 level on the salary scale.

The post holder will be expected to install new plant, equipment, and services, and will be responsible for carrying out the full planned and preventative maintenance (PPM) programme. Additionally, the post holder will work from manuals, instructions, drawings, and specifications without direct supervision.

Skills and qualifications required
The successful candidate will have completed a recognised qualification or training in accordance with the current BS 7671 Edition wiring regulations and will hold, at minimum, an NVQ Level 2 in Electrical Installations.

It is essential that the successful candidate can demonstrate experience in the maintenance of commercial, industrial, and domestic electrical supplies. It is advantageous if experience in installation can also be evidenced. The successful candidate must be able to communicate effectively and be willing to learn new working methods, showing flexibility where required.

Hours of work are 36 hours per week, to be worked over a shift system of 7am – 7pm. Shift (other than 0800 to 1600) and Weekend working is expected to be 1 in 6 but some flexibility is required. The post holder will be expected to cover the ‘on-call’ rota, which is anticipated to be 1 week in 12.

At the University of Essex, internationalism and diversity is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries, faiths and backgrounds, where you can find the world in one place.

To support this commitment we have our Global Forum, a staff-led network that promotes and celebrates the rich cultural diversity among Essex staff, and our Colchester campus based Faith Centre, which hosts regular services, meetings and events organised by our chaplains and faith representatives.
