How will you contribute?

Join our dynamic team with this exciting job opportunity focused on the development of the process modelling of an innovative approach for producing thick wound structure made of (recyclable) reactive thermoplastic resin targeting sustainable H2 tank storage applications.

Hydrogen based energy is an important pillar to meet future energy demands in a renewable and sustainable manner. The EU-project ECOHYDRO , just started in January 2024, targets the reduction of whole lifetime costs of hydrogen storage technologies, the development of environmentally sustainable and circular storage systems, all the while ensuring the safety of the innovative hydrogen storage technologies, through the development of filament wound composite hydrogen storage tanks using high strength carbon fibers, low viscosity thermoplastic liquid resin and instant in-situ photopolymerization. Above its outstanding processing ability, Elium© resin offers the potential to enhance the product overall performance and characteristics in particular the post-forming and joining technologies of hydrogen tank into non-cylindrical shape to maximize the volumetric hydrogen storage capacity.

Within this project, involving 15 industrial and academic partners, you will contribute to the concept demonstration by investigating experimentally the inter-relationship between the performance-process-thermophysical properties included by the post forming, joining and repair technologies. Above the understanding of the process induced potential defects, such as voids and delamination as function of processing parameters, the role of additives in the formulation on the driven physics (formability, healing, thermal withstand, consolidation) will be analyzed experimentally at the material, laminate level, and wound structure level.

This position provides a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of transformative advancements in structural composite manufacturing technology.

Your activities will include:

  • Leading the Design of Experiment and advanced characterization data analysis enabling the demonstration of the repair and post forming process as well as the definition of process window
  • Understanding of the process induced changes, both at morphological and material levels and associated multi-scale/multi-field methods developments (micro-Tomography, mechanical testing GIC, GIIC, flatwise tensile …)
  • Upscale the process at prototype (ring) level demonstrating the concept of repair and post forming.
  • Contribution to the design and performance prediction through the interaction with modelling experts and the correlation with experimental data
  • Contribution to the process modelling by providing reliable experimental data sets.
