Library Assistants (Fixed Term)

Cambridge University Libraries wishes to appoint three Library Assistants to support the delivery of library services for students, academics and researchers. Each of the roleholders will be based in a different library, as follows:

  • Divinity Faculty Library: a part-time Library Assistant (16 hours per week). The hours are to be worked across four days, from 10am-2pm. The working pattern should be fixed, but there is flexibility on which is the non- working day.

  • Haddon Library: a full-time Library Assistant (36.5 hours per week). The normal working pattern is from 8:45am to 5:15pm, Monday to Friday, with one early finish per week.

  • English Faculty Library: a full-time Library Assistant (36.5 hours per week). The normal working pattern is from 8:45am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

  • Applicants can choose to apply for any combination of these roles, or all three; please state clearly on your application form which you are intending to apply for, noting that one of the posts is available as a part-time role. Applicants who do not state which role they are applying for will be considered for all three positions.

    About the role

Each roleholder will be an essential person within a small team, consisting of the Librarian and a Senior Library Assistant. A core part of each role will be the provision of effective, inclusive frontline services to library users, online and in person, assisting them with navigating the collections and services offered, as well as dealing with a broad range of enquiries. The postholders will have a variety of responsibilities, including managing the borrowing and return of books and other items, shelving, updating and checking reading lists, and assisting with classifying and basic cataloguing of new material acquired for the library. They will contribute to library inductions and to website, LibGuides and social media content.

You will have experience working in a customer-facing role and will be able to demonstrate a commitment to delivering excellent customer service. You will have good IT skills and be able to communicate with people effectively both in writing and verbally, able to work unsupervised on routine tasks, show attention to detail, and be willing to contribute to the delivery of outstanding library services.

There are opportunities to participate in professional projects taking place across Cambridge University Libraries and you will be joining an environment in which professional development is highly valued.

Informal enquiries about the positions are very welcome, and we would encourage you to get in touch if you have any questions about the positions available, or about the criteria for applicants. In applications, we advise you to state clearly how your skills and experience meet the criteria.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.

Applications are welcome from internal candidates who would like to apply for the role on the basis of a secondment from their current role in the University.

We welcome applications from individuals who wish to be considered for part- time working or other flexible working arrangements.

We particularly welcome applications from candidates from a BME background for this vacancy as they are currently under-represented at this level in our departments.
