Library Assistant (Special Collections) in the University Libraries (Ref.: 526567) (to commence as soon as possible, on a two-year fixed-term basis, with contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 10% of basic salary, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance)

Qualifications and Qualities

Applicants should possess a Bachelor's degree in Library and Information Management or Archives and Records Management with at least 1 year's relevant post-qualification working experience, preferably in a tertiary or cultural institution. They should have a good command of written and spoken English and Chinese, strong computer software literacy (such as MS Office), and the ability to work independently and multi-task.

The Role

The appointee will be responsible for the following duties:

  • assisting in daily operations of Special Collections;
  • supervising researchers on the handling and security of the collections;
  • assisting in packing and delivering library and archival materials;
  • answering enquiries and conducting reference referrals;
  • providing counter duties including assistance with library users for research bookings, retrievals of materials, supervision of reading room and implementation of preservation control;
  • acting as front of house to help with ad-hoc tasks relating to the collection and user space of the division;
  • assisting in accession, processing and shelf management of monographs, serials and archival collections;
  • assisting in the digitization projects of archival collections;
  • performing image editing and data inputting/editing in a timely and accurate manner;
  • physical processing of archival materials;
  • promoting access to collections; and
  • performing other duties as assigned by supervisors.
  • Shift duties on weekends and off-site work will be required.
