Library Assistant (Cataloguing) in the University Libraries (Ref.: 531198)
We are looking for a Library Assistant to join the University Libraries to provide quality cataloguing service for Collection Services.
The Role
The appointee will work under the general direction of the Collection Services Librarian, Collection Services. The appointee will be responsible for performing copy/adaptive cataloging, including conducting bibliographic search, authority checking, Pinyin editing, assigning call numbers and subject headings.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Cataloguing
· Perform copy/adaptive cataloguing of both Western and Chinese materials using MARC21, RDA, AACR2R and LC pinyin guidelines.
· Assign call numbers (DDC, LCC), LC subject headings and name authority (LCNAF, HKCAN) in bibliographic records
· Conduct bibliographic searching in OCLC and various library systems
2. Electronic resource management
· Update electronic portfolios
3. Perform any other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Qualities
Applicants should possess 5 passes in HKCEE including English (min. grade C if Syllabus A/Level 2 from 2007), OR min. Level 2 or equivalent in 5 subjects in HKDSEE including English Language, OR a recognized certificate for library assistants OR a recognized certificate in the area of digital library/information centre management, and preferably some relevant library and counter services experience.
Essential qualities include:
· Proficiency in written and spoken English and Chinese (including Putonghua)
· Good communication and interpersonal skills
· Working knowledge of and skills in common software such as MS Office
· Demonstrated knowledge of cataloguing of Western and Chinese materials using MARC21, RDA, AACR2R, DDC, LCC, LCSH, LCNAF and HKCAN
Experience in the application of LC Pinyin Romanization guidelines for editing the Pinyin of Chinese bibliographical records would be an advantage.
What we offer
The appointment will be made on a fixed-term full-time contract for 2 years, to commence as soon as possible with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, together with contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme at 10% of basic salary.
