  • About This Opportunity

    This is a great opportunity for a talented and experienced Legal Counsel (Research and IP) to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for providing expert legal advice on matters related to contract, commercial, and intellectual property law matters as they pertain to the research activities of our University.

    Reporting to the Director of Legal Services (Research and IP) and the General Counsel, you will join a dynamic, collaborative team, providing legal advice on a wide range of issues affecting UQ. As a key member of our in-house legal team, you should be adaptable and flexible, ready to tackle diverse legal projects based on client demands and priorities.     Key responsibilities will include:

    Delivery of Legal Services

  • Provide timely, high-quality legal advice on contract, commercial, and intellectual property matters relating to the research activities of the University, to the Vice-Chancellor, Provost, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), and other key decision makers at UQ.
  • Business and Strategic

  • Promote Legal Services' capabilities and contribute to enhancing UQ staff's legal knowledge.

  • Support continuous improvement and innovation in legal function delivery and assist in developing and maintaining legal resources and precedents.

  • Foster Team Environment: Participate in creating a positive, professional team culture and help identify and manage emerging legal issues, priorities, and risks for UQ.

  • Key Stakeholder and Relationship Management

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal clients, team members, and external stakeholders, while working collaboratively to contribute to team outcomes.
  • About You

    Essential

    The successful applicant must be admitted as a Solicitor or Barrister of the Supreme Court of Queensland, with demonstrated relevant expertise and experience (a minimum of 3 years post admission experience is preferred).

  • Extensive experience in commercial, contract, and intellectual property law with skills in advising on complex projects.

  • Proficient in drafting legal documents and resolving complex legal issues.

  • Results-driven with sound judgment, commercial acumen, and the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

  • Strong communication skills, capable of building positive relationships with diverse stakeholders, and adaptable to change and uncertainty.

  • Demonstrate teamwork, strong time management, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently or under supervision, with personal drive and integrity.

  • Desirable:

  • Understanding of the legislative framework that applies to UQ or experience in acting for a statutory body or government entity.
  • You must have unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment and may be required to complete background checks including, criminal history and education checks.
