Lecturer in German, Specific Purpose Contract, 1FTE, Contract Type A, College of Arts Social Sciences and Celtic Studies

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the position of Lecturer in German (Specific Purpose Contract circa 12 months). The appointment is tenable from the 1st August 2024.

We are seeking an excellent academic and passionate teacher who will play a key role to the delivery and administration of modules on the Bachelor of Arts, BA Global Languages and associated programmes and who will also contribute to, coordination and administration across the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures.

The appointee will be an employee of the University of Galway, working within the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures and with an affiliation to the discipline of German. Colleagues in German at the University of Galway contribute to a wide range of diploma and degree courses in German language and Culture studies across several Colleges (Arts, Commerce, Law and Science) within the University, as well as to the School's flagship BA (Global Languages) Degree. Postgraduate programmes are offered by taught courses (two MA programmes) and by research (MA and PhD.) in the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Celtic Studies. Colleagues are active in a number of areas of research, including language teaching methodologies, environmental humanities, translation studies, GDR Literature, memory and trauma studies and colonial and post-colonial questions. Student exchanges and placements exist with industry and third-level institutions in Germany and Austria.

The appointee will be expected to make a strong contribution to teaching language and culture at both undergraduate and postgraduate level within the discipline and on the School's undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The main focus of the workload will be language teaching.

Applicants must have a PhD in German and have language teaching experience at all UG levels. The successful candidate will contribute to the teaching of German language at all levels within German and will contribute to interdisciplinary modules in the BA Global Languages (for example Intercultural Communication, Linguistics or Translation Theory).

Salary: €59,801 to €95,401 pro rata p.a (applicable to new entrants effective from January, 2011) This appointment will be made on the Lecturer scale in line with current Government pay policy and in accordance with the terms and conditions of the University's Remuneration policy.
