International College of Pharmaceutical Innovation (ICPI):

RCSI School of Pharmacy & Biomolecular Sciences (PBS) has recently established a Joint Educational Institute (JEI) with Soochow University (SUDA) in China. This new College, the International College of Pharmaceutical Innovation (ICPI), represents a significant, and exciting, collaboration in China. We are seeking applications for a full-time, permanent Lecturer / Senior Lecturer role with the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences for the JEI with Soochow University. The appointee will join a growing team of academics within the School who will deliver the portfolio of programmes to students in both RCSI Dublin and SUDA. While the primary location for this role will be in Dublin, the appointee will spend a block of approximately 12-16 weeks per academic year at Soochow University. The appointee will be provided with extensive guidance and supported throughout any assignment to SUDA, including flights, accommodation, induction and integration in Soochow University.

The new college (ICPI) will deliver, in partnership with SUDA, three programmes which are currently delivered by RCSI. These programmes are the BSc Advanced Therapeutic Technologies, BSc (Pharmacy) and a MSc by research.

Founded in 1900, Soochow University is a research-intensive university ranked in the top 5% of Chinese universities with a strong strategic focus on increasing its internationalisation and its rankings. SUDA is located in the city of Suzhou in the Jiangsu province and is a short train journey from Shanghai. The Jiangsu province itself is a densely populated (80 million) and industrialised region neighbouring Shanghai. It is considered the most developed of the 22 provinces in China with the bio/pharmaceutical industry a major source of employment in the region.

Objective of this post:

Appointable at either Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level, the objective of the post is to participate in the development, direction, teaching, facilitation and examining of the academic programmes of RCSI in Soochow, in the areas of pharmacy and also general pharmaceutical and biological sciences. The appointee may also do some teaching in their area in RCSI, Dublin. The delivery of the RCSI curriculum will be undertaken in a multi-cultural, international environment, ensuring academic quality and consistency across the RCSI and Soochow campuses.

The structure of this role will provide the appointee with ample opportunity to also develop and grow their own research activities that will be largely based in Ireland. However, in recognition of Soochow University's leading reputation in research, appointees will be encouraged to actively engage with colleagues in Soochow to identify how productive collaborations may be generated and increase their international research portfolio.

RCSI is seeking a professional who is passionate about teaching, would like to experience working as an academic in a multicultural and international environment, who demonstrates initiative, openness, and resilience.

Specific Responsibilities include:

  • Undertaking overseas assignments, as per objectives and requirements of the role
  • Participating in the delivery and administration of current teaching programmes, teaching modalities and assessment in pharmacy and the pharmaceutical and biological sciences for the various programmes of the JEI
  • Securing funding to sustain a research group of postgraduate students and other research staff, with resultant publications in journals of high quality/impact
  • Fostering industry-academia interactions and commercialization of research findings, where applicable
  • Contributing to the development and introduction of new teaching programmes/materials, teaching modalities and modes of assessment
  • Contribute as required, to the different working groups and committees within the ICPI to ensure the smooth running and administration of the College and academic programmes.
  • Liaising with colleagues across RCSI international campuses in the facilitation of research and teaching activities
  • Undergoing programmes of training and development as may be required
  • Supervising undergraduate research students and postgraduate students at Masters and PhD level
  • Participating in the development of RCSI's teaching and learning strategy including the effective use of technology-enhanced learning
  • Contributing to quality assurance/quality improvement and accreditation of existing modules
  • Performing such other related duties as may be required
  • Representing the best interests of the School and RCSI at all times
  • Person Specification Essential:

  • A pharmacy primary degree (depending on subsequent experience a pharmacy related first degree will be considered eg pharmaceutical sciences, pharmacology, medicinal chemistry)
  • PhD degree or equivalent in Pharmacy/Pharmacology
  • Competitive research record, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications in journals of high quality/impact and grant support
  • Strong teaching interest and skill set, as evidenced by experience of, a proven track record in, and enthusiasm for undergraduate teaching and assessment in Pharmacy and the biological sciences
  • Enthusiasm for your specialist teaching area and the ability to engage your students to successfully transfer this passion and learning
  • Capacity for original thought and the ability to produce original and up to date teaching methods
  • An ability to continuously adapt and innovate teaching methods to ensure students' full understanding
  • Demonstrate an interest in seeking ways and opportunities to support students' whole development
  • Effective communication style appropriate to audience and situation
  • Strong commitment to own personal and professional development
  • Has excellent time-management skills to effectively progress across all three domains of responsibilities (teaching, research, and service)
  • Can build and maintain strong working relationships
  • Has a proven ability for both independent and teamwork
  • Person Specification Desirable:

  • Pharmacy related academic experience in higher education institutions would be an advantage
  • Microbiological or antimicrobial stewardship experience would be beneficial
