The College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences is seeking to appoint a Lecturer for a maternity cover in the School of Molecular Biosciences, the successful candidate will teach and carry out research in mathematical modelling and experimental plant molecular biology.
You will be required to lead and sustain research of international standard and contribute to an excellent student experience by delivering and organising agreed teaching, assessment, and administration in our undergraduate teaching programmes (Biochemistry, Genetics, and Molecular Cell Biology) and the Food Security MSc programme.
The School of Molecular Biosciences is an internationally leading multi- disciplinary centre with seminal contributions to pioneering discovery research in molecular life sciences. Our research outputs were ranked 4th in the UK with 95% of them considered world-leading or internationally excellent in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework. Our undergraduate teaching programmes in Molecular Biosciences (Biochemistry, Genetics, and Molecular Cell Biology) were ranked as No1 in the UK (Guardian University Subject Guide 2023).
Job Purpose
The role will require the individual to lead and sustain research of international standard and contribute to an excellent student experience by delivering and organising agreed teaching, assessment, and administration in our undergraduate teaching programmes (Biochemistry, Genetics, and Molecular Cell Biology) and the Food Security MSc programme.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Deliver collaborative research projects and project managing research activities.
2. Contribute to the effective dissemination and publishing of research findings in leading journals.
3. Undertake knowledge exchange activities.
4. Take responsibility for the organisation and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities in the topics of mathematical modelling and plant molecular biology.
5. Contribute to the development of innovative approaches to learning, teaching and assessment.
6. Carry out course administration within required timescales ensuring effective communication of information, in particular assessment requirements and criteria and timely and constructive feedback on assessment.
7. Supervise project work at undergraduate and Masters levels and take forward the supervision and training of postgraduate research students.
8. Ensure an inclusive and evidence-based approach to facilitating learning in a range of face to face and potentially online delivery formats such as tutorials, lectures, problem-based learning, that promotes student participation and learning outcome attainment.
9. Develop effective working relationships with students and early career staff in the subject specialism, providing specialist advice, support and academic leadership. Work in partnership with relevant student services teams, respond appropriately to the diverse range of learning approaches and learner needs.
10. Contribute to administrative roles within the School.
11. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
12. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.
13. To contribute to the enhancement of the University's international profile in line with the University's Strategic Plan.
Qualifications/Knowledge
Essential:
A1. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework (SCQF) level 12 (PhD) or equivalent in Plant Sciences, Mathematical Modelling in Biology or related discipline.
A2. Extensive breadth and depth of knowledge in mathematical modelling and experimental plant molecular biology.
A3. Knowledge of the programming language R.
Desirable:
B1. SCQF Level 10 or 11 qualification in complementary Experimental or Computational Biology discipline.
B2. A comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge relevant to plant environmental responses, particularly in relation to cold tolerance and flowering time control.
B3. Up-to-date knowledge of bioinformatic and computational techniques.

Essential:
C1. Recognition of excellence in research and communication in a relevant subject area.
C2. Ability to communicate complex or conceptual ideas to those with limited knowledge and understanding.
C3. Established track record of research outputs.
Desirable:
D1. Proven commitment to supporting the career development of colleagues and to other forms of collegiality appropriate to the career stage.
Experience
Essential:
E1. Experience of teaching or supervision in plant molecular biology or mathematical modelling, statistics or bioinformatics
E2. Experience of research in mathematical modelling for biology.
E3. Experience supervising projects for students at various levels (BSc, MSc).
Desirable:
F1. Track record of multi-disciplinary research collaboration.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 8, £49,250 - £56,921 per annum.
This post is full time and to cover maternity leave for up to 12 months or until the substantive postholder returns.
