Interested in plant science and the environment? Birkbeck University is seeking a Lecturer in Plant Science to contribute to our expanding field of biological and environmental sciences.

The School of Natural Sciences at Birkbeck is looking for an exceptional Lecturer to join the School this September. Key areas of teaching and research include plant physiology, health and pathogenesis, plant-microbe interactions and plant responses to environmental stimuli linked to climate change.

  • £42,365 rising to £48,424 per annum (inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay)

  • As Lecturer in Plant Science you will;

  • be an active researcher in an area directly relevant to plant science and have experience in the design, delivery and convening of courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level
  • be part of a vibrant team of researchers with links to UCL through the ISMB, seeking to explore fundamental characteristics of living systems
  • benefit from an outstanding research environment, including state of the art laboratory spaces, our internationally renowned cryo-electron microscopy facility and high-performance computing resources
  • Lead an internationally recognised research programme focussed on plant science, and source external funding to support it
  • Contribute to a BSc in Environmental Science, and participate in other BSc and MSc related programmes, as well as supervising students
  • Contribute to organising teaching and research activities, be active in knowledge transfer and public engagement as well as other activities to support the strong collaborative culture of the School.

  • have a PhD in an area of plant science, or a closely related subject, that builds and expands on the School's expertise
  • have a proven record of publishing high quality research and an aptitude for, and experience in, teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level
  • have an understanding of Birkbeck, our principles of widening participation in higher education, and working with mature age, part time, and non-traditional learners from a diversity of backgrounds
  • have an interest in impact generating and public engagement activities, and be able to work collegially, with strong interpersonal, organisational and administration skills, to effectively manage teaching teams.

    Remuneration

    £42,365 rising to £48,424 per annum. The salary, Grade 7, quoted is on the College's London Pay Scale which includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the London area.
