This temporary on-call position is available starting January 15, 2024. Regular hours of work are Monday to Friday, between 8:00am to 6:00pm. Shift days and times may change depending on the Department's needs. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required. The position is located at the New Westminster campus; however, the successful candidate must be available for occasional work at the Coquitlam campus.

The Role
To provide technical, administrative and logistical support in the operation of the Chemistry laboratory including the preparation of chemical reagents, materials and displays, subject to the curricula approval of the Chemistry faculty, and coordinating the maintenance care and control of laboratory equipment and supplies. Provides exceptional client-centred service on a consistent basis to all stakeholder groups.
Responsibilities
1. Prepares a variety of chemicals, materials and displays for use in the Chemistry laboratory, subject to the curricula approval of the Chemistry faculty.
a. prepares chemical solutions, mixtures and other related materials using standard methods and recording results and calculations;
b. ensures equipment and instruments are in good working order, including performing minor equipment repairs, and maintains service records;
c. constructs or modifies laboratory equipment when necessary;
d. supervises the storage of chemicals within the laboratory and chemical bunker;
e. ensures compliance with WHMIS legislation including preparation of appropriate documentation;
f. instructs faculty, staff and students in all aspects of Health and Safety Regulations as they pertain to the laboratory.
2. Provides technical and academic assistance to Chemistry students.
a. assists students with assignments and with mastery of practical techniques;
b. supervises students in the laboratory during scheduled laboratory sessions;
c. demonstrates experimental techniques and the correct use of equipment;
d. participates as a member of the discipline, taking an active role in the development, evaluation and revision of labs and other materials;
e. assists with researching, designing and writing experiments for inclusion in laboratory manuals;
f. assists with examination invigilation.
3. Coordinates the maintenance, care and control of laboratory equipment and supplies.
a. orders, receives and checks materials and supplies, maintaining inventory and processing payments;
b. coordinates the supply and distribution of lab manuals, including an adequate supply of printed manuals;
c. books films and audio-visual equipment for chemistry laboratory classes;
d. assigns student lockers and maintains student locker lists;
e. coordinates the loan of materials to students;
f. coordinates the circulation of periodicals and other materials among discipline members.
4. Performs other related duties.
a. provides coverage for Laboratory Technician IV positions when required;
b. maintains currency in relation to college chemistry courses.
