Junior Clinician in Small Animal Medicine

Job purpose

To contribute to the delivery of an efficient and effective small animal internal medicine referral service by providing clinical activity in the Small Animal Hospital under supervision of ECVIM Diplomates and residency-trained clinicians. To contribute to the School objectives relevant to national and international excellence in clinical service, teaching and research.

N.B. This post is offered on a 1 year fixed-term basis, such that they offer the early-stage clinical experience required as vets prepare for further specialist training, for example through European Board of Veterinary Specialisation (EBVS®) approved residencies and/or masters formal training programmes. While appointments may be extended for short-fixed term period where this would be in the mutual interest, in the interests of ensuring that veterinary career development is supported, and to assist with recruitment to the University's EBVS® approved Residency and our own Masters Programmes, the one year duration will remain the normal duration.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical:

1. To contribute to the delivery of a small animal internal medicine referral service by providing a high quality service and appropriate advice to external referring practices and owners that will consequently maintain a clinical referral workload necessary to support the commercial, teaching and scholarship activities.

2. To support the development of novel approaches and techniques to aid diagnosis and treatment and exploit the opportunities to enhance the income generation capability of the service.

3. To contribute to the out-of-hours referral service provision at weekends on a 1:4 basis which may include CT image acquisition.

4. To participate in the out-of-hours first opinion service if required, ensuring adequate cover is available for the provision of direct supervision, advice and expertise when required.

5. To ensure compliance with the continuing professional development requirements of the appropriate speciality and the RCVS.

6. To participate in promotional activities and events relating to the Small Animal Hospital.

7. To contribute to the ongoing development of the academic discipline of the Division.

Teaching:

8. To support the delivery of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching activities within veterinary medicine in accordance with established programme.

9. To support the development of creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, in accordance with the University's Quality Enhancement Strategy, so that the educational opportunities available to students are maintained or improved.

10. To deliver a range of assessment activities and engage fully in the examination process as appropriate, using a variety of methods and techniques and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning.

Clinical Scholarship:

11. To support and collaborate in appropriate clinical scholarship projects/trials within the Small Animal Hospital and to present findings at national and international meetings to ensure a high profile for the School, as well as the University of Glasgow.

12. To attend and actively participate in national/international events/research seminars/conferences within the service area.

Administration:

13. To contribute to the administrative work of the Hospital/Division as assigned by the Clinical Director/Head of Division.

14. To contribute to the performance and development review processes as appropriate in accordance with university strategy.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential :

A1 Veterinary degree registerable with RCVS. For those individuals who are not already Members of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, or citizens a majority English Speaking Country it will be necessary, in order to be registerable with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, to demonstrate the minimal required standard of the RCVS at the time of application (and this will be checked if the applicant is invited for interview).

Desirable:

B1 Prior training and experience in small animal internal medicine

B2 Masters, PhD or other evidence of research training.

Skills

Essential:

C1 High standard of communication skills both orally and written.

C2 Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

C3 Self-motivated, able to plan for contingencies and think strategically.

C4 High standard of presentation skills.

C5 Ability to provide advice to clinicians and external veterinary surgeons.

Desirable:

D1 Ability to provide veterinary care to small animal patients receiving specialist care in the small animal hospital. D2 Understanding and experience of statistics, databases and other IT applications/packages.

Experience

Essential:

E1 Post-graduate clinical experience in small animal internal medicine.

Desirable:

F1 Previous experience within a clinical setting.

F2 Teaching experience relevant to the HE sector.

F3 A track-record of clinical publications.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 6, £33,232 - £36,924 per annum.

This post is full time and fixed term for up to 12 months from start date.
