The Department of Earth Sciences is seeking an IT Manager. The holder of this post will play an essential part in enabling all activities undertaken by the Department of Earth Sciences and ensure that the Department benefits from internal and external technological change.
The digital landscape in which the Department operates is changing. On the one hand, the use of digital technologies is now essential to enable our groundbreaking research and excellent teaching. On the other, our engagement with the University Digital Transformation Strategy means that we increasingly seek to take advantage of shared facilities where this is appropriate and only deploy bespoke solutions where this is required. The IT Manager will engage across the institution to ensure that we make the right choices in the Department as these changes roll out. This also provides an opportunity for us to update our approach supporting to the administrative, teaching and research functions delivered in the Department. Our administrative systems could be streamlined and simplified, with staff in the Department encouraged and supported through this process. Our approach to digital education could be enhanced. We should reimagine how we use digital technology to support research, both for computational and lab-based science. The IT Manager will take the lead on coordinating and driving this change.
During this time of change there is a need to continue to deliver a wide range of services and, as the leader of a small team, the IT Manager will oversee the delivery of the IT requirements of the Department which underpin our research and teaching activities. Alongside this operational work (including tasks such as managing the infrastructure, ensuring there are adequate security arrangements in place, procuring hardware and software, undertaking testing and troubleshooting) the postholder will play a key role in developing a detailed IT strategy. They will act as an expert advising Departmental managers, leaders and committees on how digital technology can be used now and in the future. Many of these activities involve providing timely and effective support to users with a diverse range of skill sets and experience levels. The postholder must work amongst other internal and external IT service providers for the University to provide the best service for the Department.
About you
You will have demonstrable experience of managing change in a complex organisation, have the ability to shape develop, own and deliver strategic plans including the need to change services in response to internal and external stakeholders and have the ability to lead a small team, and to troubleshoot and explore solutions and line manage staff constructively.
You will also have excellent oral and written communication skills as well as excellent organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise/adapt to changing priorities, multi-tasks and make appropriate decisions. You will have experience of troubleshooting hardware issues and experience of hardware/software support for Macs and/or PCs and familiarity with MS Office, emailing clients, data security, firewalls and the use of automation to simplify these tasks.
